for stillborn child

P**a Medical Aid Fund
Our P**A funeral benefit offers a payout upon the death of principal or dependent members to extend financial support for use as they see fit in their painful time of mourning. The funeral benefit is paid to a surviving spouse or some other nominated family member.

The maximum cover is BWP13 000 and the minimum cover is BWP 2 000 depending on the scheme and membership category.

Botswana Public Officers' Medical Aid Scheme
BPOMAS currently offers members a funeral benefit that is given to a principal member and their dependents at no cost.

The maximum cover is BWP12 500 and the minimum cover is BWP1200 depending on the member category either main member or dependent.

A Medical Coder must claim ALL provider funds not because the provider loves money but because the money sustain providers ( physicians, pharmacist) to keep the business growth.

Claims must be submitted at the right time, with the right medical codes/nappi code so that the Medical Aid only pays for the services rendered.

Example

Right Nappi Code must be assigned since it contains a suffix for pack size( pack size is the quantity)

If Mayogel syrup 100ml nappi code is 1000 and the suffix is 001

And Mayogel syrup 200ml the nappi code is 1000 with nappi suffix 002.
When a doctor prescribe the one for 100ml but send the nappi code 1000-002, the medical aid will pay more money for something which wasn't dispensed or vice verse if the doctor prescribe the one for 200ml but use the nappi suffix for 100ml, the medical aid pays less money and the provider make loss.

LETS LEARN ABOUT BPOMAS LEDGER BOOKS. MEDICAL CODERS MUST KNOW WHICH MEDICAL AID IS IN A BETTER POSITION TO CONTINUE FINACING PATIENTS HEALTH.

The paragraph below is from BPOMAS AGM Report 2020, page 7

"10.1.1.2 At Scheme level, Gross Contributions Income
(GCI) for the year was P735 mln compared to
P693 mln of the prior year. This was attributable to
5% subscriptions adjustment effected at beginning
of the financial year and also growing membership
base. Healthcare Cost (HCC) closed the year
at P658.9mln, up by 14% from prior year. This
increase was largely due to increase in utilisation
as well as a tariff increase of 3% effected on 1st
April 2018. The increase in Healthcare Costs
resulted in increase in claims ratio to 87%, from
82% in the 2017/18 financial year and was above
target range of 80-85%."

My profession is Medical Coding, one of the most powerful undermined field. Medical Coders play a big role in the running of the health facilities, medical insurances, government setup e.g Health ministries.

Wherever I go I smell different medical codes, I smell ICD-10 codes, I breath out HCPCS, I wear CPT codes, I sense NAPPI codes wherever I am. Tariff codes is the taste I feel.

Medical Coding in Botswana is emerging, up until we develop our own medical coding tool just like USA developed ICD-10-CM from ICD-10.

As a Medical Coder, the best University you can go too is called; "Developing Love And Passion in Your Heart about Medical Coding".

Medical Coding is easier, it's all about learning and updating your content then follow the rules outlined.

Nappi Code are used by pharmacies to facilitate claiming process. A standard coding of all drugs and health devices in Republic of South Africa. We also adopted Nappi Code from SA in Botswana.

Medical Coders bridge the gap between a health facility and medical aid. It is the duty of a medical coder to make sure the health facility claims all the money for the services rendered to the patient by the provider with the assignment of the accurate ICD-10 code for diagnosis, accurate nappi code for drugs, and accurate tariff code.

Example:
Adco-mayogel is of different pack size
Mayogel syrup-100ml
Mayogel syrup-200ml

So If the doctor prescribe Mayogel syrup 100ml- the right nappicode with the right nappi suffix must be used. Using wrong nappicode result in medical aid paying for wrong drug hence FRAUD case.

Medical Aid in Botswana must start covering for counseling sessions, atleast a number of agreed visits per financial year.

This will even help them reduce cost, since less claims will be submitted by doctors.

In other hand, the medical aid are paying more money now because patients with stress issues and depression end up going for unending consultations,hence doctors prescribe stress relieve medications.

Now is(consultation + medication)

Medication prescribe time and again means damage of some organs( example if taking medication which contain paracetamol for many days it can damage your liver)

When other organs get damaged it means more consultations now.
The easiest logic is to prevent; I challenge medical aid to fund me and do evidence based research.

PRESS RELEASE- BOTSWANA INTRODUCES NEW COVID-19 REQUIREMENTS AT PORTS OF ENTRY

The Ministry of Health and Wellness informs members of the public and the international community that effective 14th February 2022, there will be some changes at all ports of entry in Botswana, for purposes of reducing the risk of imported COVID-19 cases into the country. The new changes include:

a. That all persons entering Botswana should show proof that they have been fully vaccinated. Fully vaccinated means having taken two doses of a two dose vaccine regimen or single dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. If one has taken any of the two and is overdue for booster shots, they are no longer regarded as fully vaccinated, until they have taken the booster shot.

b. When a person is not fully vaccinated, they will be required to present a 72 hour negative PCR COVID-19 test result and undergo COVID-19 vaccination at the port of entry, which will be facilitated by the ministry for free. After vaccination, they will be allowed into the country.

c. Alternatively, if one has no proof of being fully vaccinated and has no 72 hour negative PCR test result, they will be required to undergo PCR testing at ports of entry, at their own cost and where necessary quarantine at own cost, while waiting for results. If results are negative they will be allowed into the country. If results are positive, they will be allowed to isolate within the district of port of entry, at own cost.

d. If one has no proof of being fully vaccinated, is not willing to be vaccinated at the port of entry, has no 72 hour negative PCR test result and is not willing to be tested at own cost, they will not be allowed entry into Botswana, if they are foreigners.

If they are citizens, they will be liable to a fine of P5 000.00 or imprisonment not exceeding one year or both.

In short, proof of being fully vaccinated is now the most important requirement for entry into Botswana.
