Botswana Federation of Trade Unions The Botswana Federation of Trade Unions (BFTU) is the National Trade Union Federation for Botswana founded in 1977.

Botswana Federation of Trade Unions is the "motherbody"of Trade Unions in Botswana. It has 25 members who are called Affiliates, the membership is derived from Parastatals, Private Sector and the Public Sector.

Workers and employers have to be taught about freedom of asociation.

Bangwe ba dumela gore ba joine Trade Union ke fa management o dumalana le Union ba sa itse gore its their right to join a Trade union.

Section 56 of the Trade Unions and Employers Organisation CAP 48:01 e bua gore mohiri ga a tshwanela go kganela babereki gore ba joine Union.

Botswana has ratified International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conventions 87 and 98 that deal with Freedom of association and Collective bargain.

It is upon as workers to stop this .

BFTU is there to assist if there is intimidation fa babereki b a supa kgatlhego ya go joina Trade union.

Every other week, a fresh story breaks accentuating the worsening plight of that most wretched social stratum in Botswana – the working class.

September is the month of Independence in Botswana.

Workers are still oppressed by socio-economic conditions, take a stand and free yourself by joining a Trade Union.

Its that time of the month, workers are expecting and some have been paid their wages/salaries.

For those who are paid on monthly basis, the law (Employment Act CAP 47:01) has divided the month into several categories to help determine the daily rate.

Section 95 (8) categorises the days as such:
a) 22 days for those who work 5 days in a week.
b) 24 days for those who work 5 and half days in a week.
c) 26 days for those who work 6 days in a week.

On the 15th of August 2015, Botswana Federation of Trade Unions (BFTU) held its General Council at Mahalapye.

What is the General Council?

The General Council is a body established under Rule 10 of the Federation's constitution.

It is comprised of:
a) The Executive Board
b) Chairpersons and General Secretaries of Affiliates or their representatives.
c) Chairpersons and General Secretaries of Women's Council and Regional Committees.

Duties of the General Council

It exercise all powers and perform all such acts as it deems necessary for promoting the interests of the Federation, the affiliated unions and the Labour movement.

Once again, we’ve been asked by our fellow trade unionists in Mexico for help.

A few days ago, a number of community activists and trade unionists — members of the mine workers union — were arrested and, in one case, beaten, by security forces.

They were not brought before a judge, or charged, and some were released.

The arrests are connected to the local community’s struggle against Excellon, a Canadian company.

The union is demanding that any charges be dropped, and that the safety of the union members and community activists be guaranteed.
