Kanye Independent Living Center - KILC

Kanye Independent Living Center - KILC Assists and promote self-determination of people with disabilities achieve independence, self-reliance and community participation.

Kanye Independent Living Centre (KILC), a
registered, not-for-profit, disabled people-owned and run organization was established in 2007 to empower its members to achieve independence, self-reliance and community participation. The Centre is premised on the philosophy that Letsema le thata ka beng (or Nothing about us without us) because we believe that people with disabilities
when provided with necessary tools can (re)direct their own lives. Kanye Independent Living Centre is funded mainly through goodwill by the government, private companies/entities and individuals as well as the community in general. Kanye Independent Living Centre (KILC) is borrowed heavily from the Canadian or North American concept of Independent Living (IL). The following are the guiding operating principles of KILC:
• Being consumer-controlled and having a cross
disability focus. In other words, the Board of
Directors consists of a majority of consumers
representing a broad range of abilities and
expertise. Programs are offered to a diverse
membership and to individuals who have a range of disability (ies);
• Promoting integration and full participation of
people with disabilities, which enable people with disabilities to have the same rights and
responsibilities as non-disabled persons;
