MATERNAL MORTALITY AND MORBIDITY MEETING

Health service providers in Mahalapye convened this morning to deliberate on critical issues surrounding maternal mortality and morbidity in the district. The meeting brought together key stakeholders to review maternal health outcomes, and strengthen strategies aimed at safeguarding the lives and well-being of mothers. It also assess current health challenges faced in district.
Discussions focused on improving access to quality antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care services, early identification and management of high-risk pregnancies, and strengthening referral systems across facilities. Participants also emphasized the importance of promoting positive health-seeking behavior among expectant mothers, encouraging early booking for antenatal care, adherence to medical advice, and timely presentation to health facilities during emergencies.
The team comprised health service providers from Mahalapye District Hospital, Sefhare Primary Hospital, and Primary Healthcare services within the district. Their collective commitment highlights a unified approach to reducing preventable maternal deaths and complications, while ensuring safer pregnancies and improved maternal health outcomes across the district.
When closing the meeting, Mahalapye District Hospital Superintendent, Dr Kagiso Tshegetsang applaud everyone for attending the meeting. He encouraged constructive participation and support to ensure desired health outcomes.

The Deputy Council Chairman, Hon. Thopho Gaolatlhe, recently paid a courtesy call to Mahalapye District Hospital to appreciate its operations and understand the challenges faced by the institution.
In welcoming the delegation, the Hospital Superintendent, Dr. Kagiso Tshegetsang, outlined several key challenges affecting the hospital. These include delayed payment to service providers, shortages of patient food, and an inadequate number of ambulances. He commended Mahalapye District Council (Primary Healthcare) for consistently providing support, particularly by availing ambulances for emergency referrals when needed.
On the availability of medicines, Dr. Tshegetsang reported notable improvement, stating that while some medicines are currently in stock, others remain unavailable. The hospital Pharmacist, Mr. Dumi Dumani, confirmed that medicines available include TB drugs, anaesthetic drugs, anti-hypertensive and anti-diabetic medications, vaccines, malaria treatment, antibiotics, and ARVs.
In his remarks, Hon. Thopho Gaolatlhe applauded the hospital management for maintaining quality service delivery despite the existing challenges. He was accompanied by Hon. Councillor Semetsa, Hon. Councillor Magapa, Principal Nursing Officer I (Primary Healthcare) Ms. Bontshetse Mmolawa, and Mahalapye District Council Public Relations Officer, Mr. Kgwadu.

SUPPORT VISIT CONDUCTED BY CENTRAL MEDICAL STORES AND BDF AT MAHALAPYE DISTRICT HOSPITAL

A support visit was conducted by CMS personnel together with the Operation Botsogo team from the Botswana Defence Force, which is responsible for logistics related to the procurement of medicines and medical commodities. The team visited Mahalapye District Hospital at the beginning of this week to assess the current availability and status of medicines in the district, and to share ideas and provide guidance where necessary. The visiting team comprised Mr. Kagiso Mooketsane from Central Medical Stores (CMS), from Operation Botsogo (BDF) was Colonel Mokoka, Lieutenant Colonel Modise, and Major Nthibo.

Mahalapye District Hospital received a consignment of medications from CMS yesterday . The delivery has improved the availability of medicines in health facilities across the district, as the Ministry of Health, through CMS, continues to source essential medications for Batswana. The community is encouraged to use their medications as prescribed by health workers.
