Here’s a story you should know about that we came across this week. 😳
Monday night my phone rang, on the other end was a 67 yr old senior in tears, begging for help for him and his quadriplegic wife (55) as they have been living in a tent for over a month due to their landlord selling their rental house and they couldn’t find any housing options anywhere.
An hour after the call, we connected at the library and quickly learned they were discharged from the hospital hours before, put in a cab and sent to the income assistance office in Abbotsford with no plan in place for housing or shelter.
They were both wearing clothes the hospital gave them as all of their belongings were destroyed in a flood. They’re tent, clothing, medication, and her electric wheelchair had all been destroyed, and they had no money or food or anything. He was wearing shoes the hospital gave him that were too small so the nurse cut it open to fit his foot into then zap strapped it shut. 🤬
I sat with them at the library for a hour and called every shelter in town. Three of the shelters said they were aware of the couple but could NOT TAKE THEM because she was beyond the shelters level of care…ONE SHELTER HAD BEDS FOR THEM and I explained that the man does everything for his wife and they don’t need to do anything, they just need a warm place to go for a night or two until I find them something more permanent….BUT THEY REFUSED TO TAKE THEM because of her condition …🤬
So, I brought them back to the hospital. One of the triage nurses heard my plea, saw the lady was in very bad shape and brought her in immediately to a bed and see a nurse, to get her medication back on track while the social work team could advocate for them to get proper help and assistance this time instead of being discharged into the cold without a proper discharge plan like hours previously…
I sat with them until 11 pm, made sure the nurse saw them and they wouldn’t be thrown away again…Then I came home to draft an email trying to get support in place for the next day.
Well, here’s where things get GOOOOD!😭😭😭😭
The amazing social work team at ARH worked diligently behind the scenes and solidified a room for them with the only place that would step up to help this couple…
Jeanette and Tina from Ravens Moon here in Abbotsford were happy to open up a home to them that day! They went straight from the hospital to their new temporary home where they have all their needs met. They now have an opportunity to get on their feet as they only wanted a hand up-not a hand out.
Yesterday Karen-(from our barber team) and myself went to their new home. During this visit we connected, gave them both a fresh haircut, food, and lots of love as they both were in much better spirits, starting to have hope again.
Some might ask, why didn’t you contact the news? Well, I did! My friend from CTV News will hopefully be doing the story on Monday-if everything works out. Stay tuned folks, it’s gonna ruffle some feathers as this whole situation was a disgustingly negligent failure by many agencies in abbotsford and our FH medical system….and this happens way too often…
To the nurses, doctors, social workers-that cared,Janette & Tina- from ravens moon, thank you for stepping up and helping this couple ❤️❤️
As tough as this was to watch these two hurt so bad, I knew the Lord was up to something good.❤️
Please pray for this couple as they restart their journey.
