Executive Dysfunction — Understanding What’s Really Going On

Have you ever heard someone say, “They just need to try harder”?
When it comes to executive dysfunction, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Executive functioning is what helps us plan, focus, remember steps, manage time, and regulate emotions.
When these skills aren’t firing smoothly, everyday tasks, like starting homework, cleaning a room, or sending an email, can feel impossible, not because someone doesn’t care, but because their brain is working differently. 🧠

This post breaks down 4 common myths about executive dysfunction and what’s really going on beneath the surface.

💬 Understanding leads to compassion.
💡 Compassion leads to better support.

Save this post to revisit later or share it with someone who might need to hear it today. 💛

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions in children — and it’s often misunderstood. ADHD isn’t about laziness or poor discipline; it’s about differences in how the brain regulates attention, impulse control, and activity levels.

🧠 What ADHD Can Look Like:
- Difficulty staying focused on tasks that aren’t interesting or rewarding
- Trouble sitting still or feeling constantly “on the go”
- Acting before thinking or interrupting often
- Forgetting instructions or losing items
- Emotional ups and downs that feel “bigger” than expected

Every child with ADHD is unique. Some are daydreamers who struggle to finish homework; others are energetic movers who can’t seem to slow down. Many kids have both attention and hyperactivity challenges.

💡 What Helps:
- Structure and predictability: Clear routines reduce stress and help kids know what to expect.
- Positive attention: Notice and praise effort, not just results.
- Movement breaks: Physical activity supports focus and regulation.
- Collaboration: Teachers, counselors, and parents working together make a huge difference.

With understanding, patience, and the right supports, children with ADHD can thrive, often showing incredible creativity, curiosity, and resilience.

❤️ If your child is struggling with focus, energy, or regulation, an ADHD assessment or consultation can help clarify what’s happening and identify strategies to support them both at school and at home.

Every child learns differently — and that’s okay. Children with dyslexia may find reading, spelling, or writing challenging, even though they’re often creative, curious, and deeply insightful thinkers.

Getting a dyslexia diagnosis can be life-changing — not because it puts a label on your child, but because it helps explain what’s been happening and opens the door to support that works.

With early identification and the right strategies, kids with dyslexia can learn effectively and build confidence in their strengths.

✨ Dyslexia-friendly supports might include:
📚 Structured literacy programs
🧠 Multisensory learning (seeing, hearing, and touching words)
❤️ Encouragement and understanding at home and school

When we understand how a child learns, we can help them thrive — not just in reading, but in life.

Understanding Learning Disabilities: Why Early Diagnosis Matters

Learning disabilities aren’t about intelligence — they’re about how the brain processes information. Children with dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, or other learning differences often work twice as hard to keep up, even when they’re just as bright and capable as their peers.

Getting a diagnosis doesn’t “label” a child — it empowers them. 💪
It helps families, teachers, and counselors understand what’s really going on beneath the frustration or self-doubt. With the right supports in place, children can learn in ways that fit their unique strengths and needs.

Early identification can mean:
✅ Tailored learning strategies
✅ Boosted confidence and motivation
✅ Reduced anxiety and behavioural challenges
✅ A stronger partnership between home and school

When we understand how a child learns, we unlock their potential — not limit it.

🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡

Today, we pause to honor Survivors of residential schools, their families, and the children who never made it home. This day is not only about remembrance—it is also about responsibility.

Reconciliation asks us to:
🔸 Listen to Indigenous voices and stories
🔸 Learn the truths of Canada’s history
🔸 Reflect on the ongoing impacts of colonialism
🔸 Act in ways that support healing, justice, and equity

Every step we take toward understanding and accountability matters.

✨ Research matters. Decades of high-quality studies show that Tylenol (acetaminophen), when used as directed during pregnancy, is safe and does not increase the risk of autism. Autism is primarily genetic and influenced by complex biological factors—never caused by taking Tylenol. 💙

Tylenol remains a safe, effective choice for managing pain and fever during pregnancy. Always follow dosage directions and consult your healthcare provider with any questions.

✨ What are Educational Assessments? ✨

Educational (or psycho-educational) assessments are more than just “tests.” They’re a way to better understand how a child or teen learns, thinks, and processes information. 🧠📚

Through a combination of activities, questionnaires, and conversations, these assessments explore areas like:
✅ Learning strengths and challenges
✅ Attention and memory
✅ Problem-solving and reasoning
✅ Reading, writing, and math skills
✅ Emotional or behavioural factors that may affect learning

The goal? To create a clear picture of a student’s unique learning profile and provide recommendations for support at school, at home, and in the community. 🌱

Educational assessments can be incredibly helpful for identifying learning differences, ADHD, giftedness, or other challenges—and most importantly, they help children and teens get the support they need to thrive. 💡✨

How Can I Help?

Hello! I am a Registered Psychologist working in Airdrie, Alberta (and surrounding areas). I completed my Masters of Education degree from the University of Calgary in 2018 in the faculty of School & Applied Child Psychology. I specialize in conducting psycho-educational assessments for children aged 6-17. I also provide parenting consultations in order to target specific parenting concerns (i.e. emotional regulation; sleep habits; executive functioning).

I have worked for a variety of organizations, such as Rockyview School Board, CanLearn Society and Alberta Health Services. Prior to becoming a psychologist I worked as an elementary school teacher with the Calgary Board of Education for 7 years.

I am a wife and mother to my “spirited” 7-year old daughter. In my “me” time, I enjoy reading, exercising, travelling and engaging in any and all form(s) of self-care.

My professional areas of interest include learning disabilities, ADHD, anxiety, empowering parents and strengthening the home-school partnership.
