Happy St Pattie’s day! ☘️

We had so much fun building leprechaun traps.

These types of open ended activities can feel challenging for students who prefer directive step activities, but imagination and critical thinking are very valuable skills.

Over multiple sessions we had opportunities to work on retelling the story, flexible thinking, trying different ideas and problem solving.

We also engaged in conversations about ‘being tricky’ as in difficult, and as in sneaky; as well as ‘being lucky’ as in fortunate/blessed, and as in happening upon a surprise or winning. ☘️

My heart and soul feel this.

The best example of emotional co-regulation that I’ve seen in a long while. This is what I hope to coach and support others to do and to understand.

Eva’s team mates meant well trying to calm her, but inadvertently could have been contributing to the escalation with everyone all talking and touching. It was too much for her brain and body to process adding to the perceived stress.

Joe helped calm her system and made her feel safe. Using one or two words to reassure her, breathing with her and supporting with familiar calming tool-squeezing her hands.

It takes a trusting relationship, an understanding of physiological impacts on the brain & body and utilizing familiar strategies. Science and compassionate humanity.
