🎥 Medical Minute: What is a Physical Abilities Test?

A Physical Abilities Test helps determine whether someone can safely perform the essential physical demands of their job.

Through exercises like lifting, pushing, pulling, climbing, and walking, the test mirrors real workplace activities to evaluate a worker’s functional ability and tolerance for the role.

These assessments are commonly completed before starting a physically demanding job or when transferring to a new position.

This video is part of our Medical Minute series, where DriverCheck experts break down important drug and alcohol testing and occupational health topics. Follow the series for more quick insights.

Thirty years ago, we began as a small operation in Ayr, Ontario, working with Canadian trucking companies as new cross-border transportation regulations came into effect.

Founded in 1996 by Dr. Chris Page, Dr. Mary-Jean Page, and Maggie Dunnett, DriverCheck was built on a physician-led model grounded in one core principle: medical integrity and sound clinical judgement must guide workplace fitness for duty decisions.

Today, we work with employers across Canada in safety-sensitive industries, delivering drug and alcohol testing and occupational health services designed to help them meet regulatory requirements, manage risk, and promote worker health.

As we mark our 30th anniversary, we’re grateful to our employees, clients, and partners who have been part of this journey. We look forward to continuing our work to help build a healthier and safer world.

At DriverCheck, this cause remains close to our hearts. By standing together, we can help foster understanding, compassion, and progress in cancer care. Consider supporting the Canadian Cancer Society by donating at Cancer.ca/DriverCheck.
