Kandice Kornblum RMT

Kandice Kornblum RMT Meeting kids on their level to provide safe and effective Massage Therapy treatment! I am also a mom to a child with ASD.

I have been a Registered Massage Therapist with the CMTO since 2009 and completed my Contemporary Medical Acupuncture course at McMaster University in 2012. I come from a strong background working in orthopaedics and injury related therapy. Raising a neurodivergent child has taught me many things, and as a professional health care provider, I was able to see the need for a more inclusive approach to treatment. In 2022, I became a Certified Pediatric Massage Therapist and completed additional courses to primarily focus on the treatment of kids with ASD. My hope is that my passion to support this community combined with a strong knowledge and skill set, will allow kids of all neuro types to realize the benefits of Massage Therapy.

CHOICES!!!

We all love to make our own decisions! This is especially true for children!
If considering applying massage to your child at home, consider giving as many choices as possible!
Some examples include; location of massage, music options, lighting, or offering different textures or toys! As always, pay attention to body language that a child may be using to get their point across.

Choices give us empowerment and autonomy and that helps us to feel safe and in control. The result is a relaxed nervous system and the ability to experience all of the wonderful benefits of our massage!

A little choice goes a long way!

Toe walking!

A common characteristic in children. Although essentially harmless, toe walking can create tight or short Achilles tendons and calf muscles leading to future injury.
Massage Therapy can help to keep keep soft tissue pliable and decrease trigger points down the road!

Do you ever ask yourself "Why is my child so clumsy?!" or "They always seem to bump into things or trip over their own feet!"

There is often a reason behind this!

Proprioception...one of the extra and often forgotten senses. Recognizing where our body is in space or in other words, where our body ends and space begins can be challenging for some kids. Sometimes, the 'forgotten' sense is developing slower than what we'd like.

Massage Therapy can help! By addressing both sides of the body at once, we help to strengthen those neurological connections and conceptualize proprioception.
Body awareness for the win!

It's all about getting creative!

Massage provides proprioceptive input, which can help regulate our child’s sensory system. It is also a lovely non-verbal way to promote bonding and connection.

Some autistic children and young people are sensitive to touch, making massage challenging! In these cases, it is very important to respect our child’s boundaries; we should never force anything unessential on our child that they actively dislike.

However, with some gentle perseverance, it is possible to find a way to massage a touch-avoidant child. Some children hate light touch but really enjoy firm touch and deep pressure. Some children don’t like being touched with hands but like the feeling of an object like a brush or a roller on their skin. If we explore touch in a fun, no-pressure way, we are more likely to be successful.

03/17/2020

Good morning clients, friends and colleagues! At this time I am providing an update in regards to the CMTO and their position on COVID-19. In the best interest of the public, the college has temporarily suspended all non essential Massage Therapy treatment. I hope to be back up and running as soon as possible but for now I will not be able to provide treatment from my practice. Stay safe and take care of yourselves.
