Somatic memory refers to the way the body holds onto traumatic or stressful experiences as physical sensations, movements, + postures rather than as conscious, narrative memories.

These "body memories" can manifest as unexplained belief systems, personas, discomfort, emotional unease, chronic pain, illness, or altered movements, + postures that often exist outside of conscious awareness.

They are formed when overwhelming events trigger a physical + psychological response.

Many of these overwhelming events happen in early childhood, when you are most vulnerable + susceptible to being left alone with overwhelm.

When these somatic memories are left abandoned + unaddressed, the body continues to store these echoes of the past.

When triggered, the autonomic reaction is not that of the adult but that of the child.

The more we, as adults, intellectualize, normalize, + dissociate from our internal experiences, the more we abandon our younger selves + allow the suffering to continue.

We must recognize that healing happens through presence, safe connection, + feeling our feelings.

Moving towards ourselves with love, acceptance, + compassion, not away.

If you have not learned how to make 'holding space for feeling' a part of your practice, you are drastically limiting the true healing you can offer your clients.

A therapist who has not felt their own experiences through somatic healing work will not recognize the necessity, value, + importance for making room for this in session.

In addition, the therapist will actually encourage more dissociation, more intellectualizing, more avoidance ...

All of which creates a false sense of healing, an underlying unconscious despair, + often a client who shames themselves for 'their inability to heal'.

It's time to learn how to incorporate the body into your sessions, + it's definitely time, especially as a therapist, to get 'true healing through feeling' so that you can take your clients to these places too.
