It’s devastating and infuriating to see the UCP invoke the notwithstanding clause to restrict the rights of Two-Spirit, transgender, and gender-diverse people in Alberta. This isn’t just policy — it’s a deliberate act of harm that tells marginalized people their identities are negotiable. These decisions fuel fear, isolation, and mental health crises in communities already carrying more than their share of trauma.

Being Human Club is a proudly trans-affirming space. We stand with our 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and we refuse to let this moment pass in silence.

TAKE ACTION: Speak up. Share this. Call your MLA. Support local q***r and trans-led organizations. Check in on your friends. Your voice matters — and collective action is how we protect one another.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out:
• Alberta Mental Health Helpline (24/7): 1-877-303-2642
• Trans Lifeline: 1-877-330-6366
• Brite Line (2SLGBTQIA+ support): 1-844-702-7483
• Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868 or text CONNECT to 686868
• Hope for Wellness Helpline (Indigenous & Two-Spirit): 1-855-242-3310
• If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

You deserve safety. You deserve dignity. You deserve to exist fully and freely — and we will fight with you and for you.

🎉 We’re celebrating the birthday of our amazing cofounder Megan this week! Megan’s the ultimate Scorpio powerhouse who somehow balances deep emotional wisdom and a mean pickleball serve! 🏓💫

Whether she’s spotting a rare bird, tapping out rhythms in her dance shoes, or holding compassionate space for everyone in our community, Megan reminds us what curiosity, care, and a little sass can do.

Thank you for leading with heart, humour, and the kind of energy that could only come from a tap-dancing birder who follows her heart. ❤️ 💃🐦

We love you, Megan — here’s to another year of big feelings, good rallies, and plenty of snacks! ❤️

No need to wing it — let’s work through it together.

Life doesn’t come with a flight manual, and sometimes even the strongest wings get tired. Therapy isn’t about having it all figured out — it’s about creating a safe space to explore, heal, and grow at your own pace.

At Being Human Club, we believe that being human means sometimes stumbling before you soar. Whether you’re navigating stress, change, or simply learning to care for yourself in new ways, you don’t have to do it alone. Let’s find your rhythm, strengthen your wings, and take flight — together.

It’s no secret that Obsessive‑Compulsive Disorder (OCD) often flies under the radar, and too often it’s initially mislabelled as Attention‑Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), depression or Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).

We also know people with OCD are more likely to have mood or anxiety disorders alongside it, which means it can often be easy for clinicians or physicians to focus on the “easier to spot” depression or anxiety symptoms and miss the underlying OCD.

Because of that overlap, many Canadians end up navigating years of treatment for anxiety or ADHD—without getting to the real driver of their distress or rituals. If you’ve been treated for ADHD or depression and something still doesn’t feel “right” (those intrusive thoughts, compulsions, the need to check/neutralize), it might be worth asking: could this be OCD instead (or in addition)? You deserve clarity — and proper treatment.

So much of the healing journey is about remembering—not reinventing. One truth we often uncover in therapy is that our most authentic selves existed long before the world told us who we should be.

Healing isn’t about becoming someone new, but gently unlearning the shame, fear, and self-doubt we picked up along the way.

In the safety of therapy, we begin to peel back those layers, reconnecting with the version of ourselves that was curious, expressive, and authentic.

Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to remember and mourn the life of every child lost, as well as the children and family members who survived and are still affected by, the atrocities of the residential school system.
Indigenous Peoples have been gravely harmed and continue to be harmed by the education, health, and social services systems, and we have a role as health professionals is decolonize mental health care. We are committed to unlearning colonial practices,
de-centering whiteness, supporting Indigenous movements, and pursuing continuous learning from Indigenous voices.
We encourage you to spend time in mourning and self-reflection today. Ask yourself how you contribute to the oppression of and racism against Indigenous people and how you benefit from living on Indigenous land. Ask yourself what role you can play in supporting Indigenous communities to dismantle systems that continue to harm and oppress Indigenous Peoples and how you can do better.
Follow, listen to, and believe Indigenous folks when they speak, and then do something meaningful to actively help create a different path forward.

Fighting for Two-Spirit, Trans, and Non-Binary folks in Alberta has never been more urgent, especially in light of Premier Danielle Smith’s recent threat to invoke the notwithstanding clause to override court decisions protecting trans rights.

This move signals a troubling disregard for the hard-won protections that many in the two-spirit, trans, and non-binary communities rely on for dignity and safety.

The notwithstanding clause, which allows governments to bypass certain fundamental rights guaranteed by the Canadian Charter, presents a direct challenge to the safety and rights of oppressed groups, particularly two-spirit, non-binary, and trans folks, who already face disproportionate levels of discrimination and violence.

Standing up for two-spirit, trans, and non-binary humans in Alberta is crucial to ensuring they are able to live freely without fear of discrimination and erasure.

What can we do?

1. Contact your MLA and tell them you oppose use of the notwithstanding clause in this context. Write letters, emails, phone calls.

2. Support ongoing lawsuits (financially or by raising awareness) for the cases by Egale and Skipping Stone.

3. Monitor legal hearings; help publicize rulings and legal analyses so people understand implications.

4. Spread accurate information: what the notwithstanding clause is, what it means in terms of rights, what these laws do in practice for trans folks. Use social media, local media, community talks.

These laws affect real lives: trans youth’s access to health care, mental health, and their safety in schools.

The Charter and legal protections are foundational to rights for all—if they can be easily overridden, many protections are at risk.
