However, rather than increasing our sense of control, negative news validates our fears, heightens our anxiety, and increases our internal "need to know".

Anxiety is often overlooked and misinterpreted as aloofness or disinterest. The fact is people with anxiety are not aloof or disinterested at all, but actually want to be accepted and part of the group. They are often worried about things such as how others feel around them, if they're being judged, what to do with their hands, etc. Anxiety can manifest in many different ways depending on the person and can be difficult to identify, particularly in children and adolescents.
