🏆How to win 1st place at your Men’s Physique show

🗣“Hey, do you think I might be able to compete?”
🗣“Yes, you could, and you should.”
~
👀Looking back at the first couple months into coaching Scott, all of the signs of a champion were there.
~
🙏We had a real chance to take advantage of Scott’s work situation, which was very relaxed. This allowed us to time everything perfectly, leave nothing to chance, and basically “live like a pro”
~
💪Here is what we did to ensure Scott grabbed his 2 first place trophies:
🔹Tracked everything immaculately. None of his food was eyeballed or guessed.
🔹Logged his strength/workouts. Knowing what exercises were going well, and which ones weren’t, told us what to change and what to keep.
🔹Separated cardio from weight training. Instead of doing his cardio after his weights, we split them up, so he would have adequate energy for both.
🔹Kept open communication. If something felt off ? He told me. If things felt great? He told me. 🔹Details. Closing in on the show, we went over finer details, such as posing, back stage routines, what to expect, and more.
🔹Information. If he had questions about our plan? I told him. There was none of this “because I said so” crap.
🔹Training intensity. We had to build and retain muscle, so monitoring his training to keep it as near perfect as possible was essential.
🔹Attitude. The diet got hard. He became very hungry. He started to run low on energy. By keeping his mind focused on the right things, we crushed his doubts and worries quickly. He had a show to win.
🔹Discipline. Scott is by far one of the most regimented champions I’ve had the pleasure of coaching. He timed his pre workout meal to the minute, his training and cardio times remained consistent- all to give us perfect feedback.
🔹Prioritizing sleep. His flexible schedule allowed us to fit everything in, including adequate amounts of rest.

☝️It’s one thing to show up ready. It’s another to show up saying, “there is nothing else possible I could have done.”

😰If you have fallen victim to those - or a fitness scam of any sort - you’re not alone. I’ve wasted thousands of $$$ on this stuff.
~
🤯Between marketing, false testimonials, the placebo effect etc - it can be terrifying to try and decipher what works.
~
😃Here is how to to not get scammed:
~
✅Go to examine.com. Search for the “key ingredient” in the product. Examine uses a plethora of research, which has zero bias.
✅Ask authorities you trust. This is one of the most valuable tools you can have with a great coach - I always love helping guide people away from these ludicrous scams.
✅Look at who is selling you the product. Do they benefit themselves from the sale ?
✅Look for real reviews. Ask for evidence, not a sales pitch. Betty from amazon that lost 30 inches after one magic wrap *just* might be lying to you.
✅Sadly, come to terms with this fact: 90% + of fat loss, bodybuilding type supplements don’t work.

💪I will guarantee you that if you take the money you would be spending on these kinds of products - and invested in some world class coaching - you’ll get way more results.
~

~
👣So, what would be 100% ideal? Barefoot, especially for the stationary exercises such as squats, deadlifts, leg press, etc. ~
👀If you look at most “runners” or other “athletic shoes”, also referred to as cross trainers, they all have a couple things in common:
~
👉They have a “rocker”, which is meant to put you onto your toes, which is great if you’re running, that’s where we propel ourselves from, the toes.
👉They have a variety of cushion, ranging from a lot to minimal.
👉They’re all form fitting/snug.
~
❌So #1 and #2 is something we do not want for lifting.
~
🙌Think of your feet akin to your hands (lol!) where the toes are the fingers, and the heel is the base of your palm, by your wrist.
~
🤔Where would you push something, if you wanted wrist safety, and wanted to give maximal power?
~
🍑The butt of the palm.
~
🖐The fingers (toes) don’t have power and would cause a lot of unneeded torque on the wrist (ankle).
~
🧦So, we want to “drive through the heels”, and a shoe thats trying to put us on our toes is not ideal. It will also make the bar path (when squatting and deadlifting and more) travel in a straight line, not oscillate back and forth. I just whipped out my “Anatomy without a Scalpel” by Lon Killgore to bring you the best diagram I have to show this. Oscillation of the bar = pressure on the knees, which is unwanted as well. My photo here shows on the left = proper footwear , and a straight bar path. The right = a runner , and an oscillating bar path.
~
❓So ideal shoes for weight lifting? Something flat. There are Otomoix Stingray, Ryderwear D-mak, some lower topped Puma boxing shoes, and the Nike Free TR Fit 3. These are pics 2, 3, 4, and 5 (swipe right!) respectively.
~
‼️If you have orthotics or some other form of specialized insole, I would consult your Podiatrist before going solely (LOL!!) off my recommendations.
~

Yes, I do. However, I don’t coach just anyone.
~
I have some criteria that must be met before I accept someone new:
You must want to do this for yourself, not just others
You must be finished with seeing minimal/no results
You’re not looking for a generic “21 day quick fix”
You’re not wanting to waste (more?) time figuring things out just by yourself
You want to know how to correctly implement fitness into your lifestyle
And most importantly:
You *must* ready for a change.
~
Chris wanted a serious change. We had to balance her fitness goals with her kids, grandkids, husband, and rotating shift work as an EMT.
~
She told me, “I don’t think I want to compete, but I want to look like one of your competitors.”
~
Competing on stage isn’t for everyone. Posing in front of judges, strangers, family and friends - in a bikini - isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.
~
I did what I do with all the Mega Squad - I created customized plans for her goals, and her life. Based upon the feedback I received over the weeks, her programs evolved along with her results.

🗣“I feel burning in my forearms.”
🗣“I can’t hold onto the bar.”
~
I have pretty small hands for a guy. My grip has never been that strong, and I don’t plan in entering a powerlifting or strongman competition at any time.
~
The forearm muscles quickly turn into a limiting factor on being able to maximally build your back - especially on rowing movements.
~
Grip will give out, leaving the back muscles with quite a bit of work capacity left. This is when straps can become imperative to maximizing your back development.
~
Versa Gripps are my favourite , due to how easily you can put them on , and have the weight hang from the carpals - without cutting off circulation at the wrist (first photo)
~
Conventional straps can be used as well, and are a more economical option (second photo).
~
Even your last 1-2 sets of a heavy row or pull down can make a world of difference in allowing you to pull with the back, and not the forearms or biceps.
~
Grip strength can still be developed on arm exercises, and the warm up sets of back day. Grip strength exercises such as plate pinches and farmers holds/walks can be used.
~
“But you need a strong grip! Stop being a wuss, and just grip the damn bar - screw those straps” Sigh ...
~
I don’t remember at any point at a bodybuilding show where there was a trophy awarded to someone for their spectacular grip. I don’t think there is a pose called “Most Gripular” either 🤔
~
To engage your back during training, your hands should be thought of as hooks. Having a cue of “pull from your elbows” has helped many of my clients - pulling them behind (rowing movements) and/or towards our body (pulldown movements)
~
Worried about losing forearm size ? Hammer curls, reverse curls, even wrist curls can be used.
~
You only get 1 or 2 chances to impress the judges from the back. Don’t limit your back’s shape and size be limited by your grip strength. Strap up!
~

🎱Want Kate's super secret recipe for success?
~
👉Grab the plan, and smash it. Focus in the gym, save the social stuff for before or after.
👉Ask the right questions. The longer we trained together , the better she got at this.
👉Provide *very* detailed assessments, so we can discover all the "whys" behind her success- or lack thereof.
👉Keep it honest. Using a coach , to just lie to them about your training and nutrition seems very silly - and won't get you or the coach anywhere
👉Completed things on time. When a client works hard, I will in turn work even harder back.

🤓You might start to notice a lot of the "keys to success" seem to be the same over and over again, and you might be saying "that can't *really* all be it..."
~

With a correct offseason, you can make some very serious improvements.
Incorporating off season plans , nutritionally and training wise, to keep you in line between shows or photo shoots) can ensure and maximize your potential to jump to the next level.

I know that sickness feels like a setback from
The gym and it is, but your “triumphant return” shouldn’t be at the exact same position you were pre-sickness.

Take some time around 50% if your weights / intensity to get back into the grove and feel out your body.
-
I can tell you from previous times I’ve been out of the gym with some form of sickness, my joints hurt , they’re achy , and I can be dizzy upon my return to the gym. I’ve made the mistake of returning too early I’d going full time.

Don’t repeat my (and many other’s) mistakes.

One of the worst side effects of being sick is having no appetite (and of course along with potentially missing some much beloved gym time)

I don’t usually recommend a lot of protein shakes or “back to back” shakes during someone’s regular diet - however special circumstances can mean special diet/training measures.
