“But they just ate…”
If your baby keeps falling asleep at the breast and waking up hungry, it’s exhausting. Especially at 2am when you’re doing mental math on how long it’s been and whether you’re doing something wrong.
I hear this all the time.
Here’s what I look at as a NICU RN:
Are we watching the clock instead of watching the baby?
Are we switching breasts before the first side is truly finished?
Could reflux be interrupting feeds?
Is milk supply a factor?
Feeding in the first 3 months is not just about time. It’s about effective milk transfer and supporting a full feed so sleep can follow.
If this is happening in your house, save this post so you can come back to it during your next feed. Share it with a parent who needs to see it.
And if you want to really understand how feeding and sleep connect in the first 3 months, join my free Good Night Baby workshop. I break down what’s normal, what to adjust, and how to stop the 2am spiral.
