MYTH vs. FACT: TMS Therapy
Let’s clear up some common misconceptions about Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).
✨ MYTH: TMS is the same as electroshock therapy (ECT).
✅ FACT: TMS is non-invasive, doesn’t require anesthesia, and uses magnetic pulses, not electricity, to gently stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation.
✨ MYTH: It’s experimental or unsafe.
✅ FACT: TMS is a Health Canada-approved, evidence-based treatment with a strong safety profile and decades of clinical research behind it.
✨ MYTH: TMS is painful.
✅ FACT: Most patients describe the sensation as a tapping on the scalp. Side effects are minimal and usually fade after the first few sessions.
✨ MYTH: TMS results don’t last.
✅ FACT: Many people experience long-lasting relief. And if needed, booster sessions are available to maintain benefits.
✨ MYTH: TMS will change my personality.
✅ FACT: TMS targets mood-related brain circuits; it won’t change who you are. Many people say they feel more like themselves again.
✨ MYTH: You have to stop taking your medication to do TMS.
✅ FACT: TMS can be done alongside medications. Your care team will help tailor a safe, effective plan for you.
✨ MYTH: TMS is only for people who’ve “tried everything.”
✅ FACT: TMS is often considered after just one or two unsuccessful medication trials. You don’t need to “hit rock bottom” to seek relief.
✨ MYTH: Results are instant.
✅ FACT: TMS is a cumulative therapy. Most people begin noticing shifts after 2-4 weeks, with full benefits emerging by week 6.
✨ MYTH: TMS is only for depression.
✅ FACT: TMS is also being used to support people with anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and chronic pain. The research continues to grow!
