Over 90% of Disability Tax Credit (DTC) denials are caused by mistakes on the application form
Small errors can lead to automatic denials, including:
- Checking the wrong box, or leaving one blank.
- Writing details CRA does not consider relevant (e.g., household chores, driving, schoolwork, hobbies).
- Not giving enough clear examples of daily struggles.
In fact, even one wrong checkbox or one โirrelevantโ sentence โ no matter how strong the rest of your application is โ ๐๐๐ ๐ ๐๐๐๐บ๐ ๐ ๐ cause CRA to deny your claim.
CRAโs denial letters never explain what actually went wrong - and the letters are all templates. Most people assume โI must not qualifyโ and give up, losing out on thousands of dollars of life-changing benefits and credits and potential back pay
Thatโs exactly what CRA counts on: confusing paperwork that makes people feel helpless.
We can help.
- We offer **๐๐ฅ๐๐ ๐ค๐จ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐ก๐๐๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ช๐ฆ** to spot the problem in your application.
- For best results, we recommend a ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ต๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐ (fee required) where we examine your full CRA file โ including questionnaires, medical notes, and correspondence. This allows us to identify exactly what happened and prepare a strong reconsideration request.
- We always start with a free quick review, and only move forward if thereโs a real chance of overturning your denial.
NOTE: BEFORE sending your denied app for a quick review, please contact CRA and request your entire case file. Ask for the denied application, follow-up questionnaires & their answers, internal notes, all supporting docs or medical records. You'll need your file no matter what you choose going forward. This saves time if we feel confident we can overturn your denial and you want to get stated right away!

I am a mother. I am a mother to 7 children, several of whom have complex needs. I was introduced to the Disability Tax Credit program many years ago, nearly at its inception. My daughter (who is now 18) was critically ill as an infant. The disease she had deprived her body of red blood cells and platelets which caused her to have organ failure and a mild brain injury. Thus began an long and frustrating series of medical appointments, medication, specialists, IEPโs, and so on and so on.
We were fortunate that acquiring help and care was relatively easy. She had an amazing team at Alberta Childrenโs Hospital (Dr. Andrew Wade) who were always thorough and genuinely caring. Dr. Wade made things happen. When something wasnโt right that was unrelated to her kidneyโs, he brought in a team member from the right department. We did not experience the long waiting lists and the red tape that is all too common for many children with disabilities.
I applied for the DTC for her several years later and was easily approved. That was then - this is now.
Upon applying for another of my children with complex needs I discovered, the hard way, the approval process for the DTC has become extremely complex. I applied for my child with much more information than had been provided for my other daughter. I was denied. My doctor send additional info. I was again denied. We sent more info and were denied again. We did a new application and were denied yet again. I went to my MP who was kind, but not helpful. I spoke with the head of DTC department and was met with coldness. I asked her to review my file and tell me exactly why the application had been denied as my daughter met the criteria as written on CRAโS website. She told me she could not just pull up my file and that this was just the way things were. She told me the criteria had not changed and that CRA was under no obligation to provide specific details about why an application is denied. I asked her why denials were so high if the criteria was the same. She had no desire to have an honest conversation with me or give me any direction or guidance. I was livid.
I began researching and looking for otherโs who had this experience. The DTC is there to help offset the cost of living with a disability or raising a child with one. Our disabled population is our most vulnerable and yet approval for a program our government created is complex and nearly impossible. I discovered that many doctors were beginning to refuse to fill out applications believing CRA had changed their criteria and most people no longer qualified.
I learned eventually, through many hours of research, it is NOT because most disabled individuals no longer qualify. It is wording. It is literally using the right words in the effects of impairment section. EVEN WHEN a clear description of a personโs impairments are given, they will STILL deny if the right wording is not used.
Finding answers was difficult and I realized there was nowhere to turn for help or support. I certainly was NOT going to pay one of those โbig companiesโ who take 30% of what you get back. Not when all that is required is a simple form. Why would I pay thousands of dollars for a company to essentially write a one page essay? I knew there was nothing they could do for me that I couldnโt do for myself - it was about finding the right formula that made CRA happy.
Because I could not find a single person to connect with who had any answers or insight, I decided to create a facebook group. Surely there were otherโs who were struggling with the same frustrating process. Sure enough! There were. And now the group is 2 K plus members.
So welcome to this page! It is very much under construction as I now assist others with the application process and struggle to even keep up with the group!
So until this page has more content - JOIN OUR GROUP! There is ample information there and hundreds of supportive people who have been where you are.
