Babies are not born dirty. You don’t have to bathe them right away. They are born with many things that has purpose.
Delaying the first bath has great benefits for your baby.
💜 When baby’s are born, they are covered in vernix (baby’s “birthday frosting”) and amniotic fluid. By washing this away, we are washing away essential good bacteria that is going to build a healthy and strong immune system.
💜 Bathing a baby means they’re going to drop their temperature. We want to avoid this in the earlier time of their life as it requires them to burn glucose storage to regenerate heat. It is an unnecessary stress so early on.
💜 Instinctual smells are important, your baby has been living and is covered in the amniotic fluid. This scent is familiar and to a baby your ni***es have a very similar scent to amniotic fluid. This encourages them to find the breast and attach independently. Also a reason why avoiding soaps on chest area is also important for breast/chestfeeding.
💜 By not bathing straight away, you are improving skin to skin time. Skin to skin time is essential for humans it helps us to build a strong connection with our babies as they are intimately close to us, improving long term health benefits.
💜Delay the bath, enjoy yummy skin to skin time and see the benefits.
If you would like to delay your baby’s first bath, be sure to add this to your birth preferences and discuss this with your birth team. There is no time frame for when you have to give your baby their first bath.
When did you give your baby’s first bath?
