Today’s activity was the same as yesterday’s in Trail. We discussed the quote and what it made us feel/ think about. Then we made art based on that. We talked about similarities between animal and human behaviour, as well as the importance of play, and the sense of magic in nature.

As you saw, we were doing a drawing exercise called “blind contours”. The idea is to look at an object or person and draw them without looking down at your page and without taking your pencil off the paper (1 continuous line). I notice it often does a good job at capturing the essence of the thing even if it’s not a “perfect” representation. The activity is playful and aims at letting go of producing a “perfect” drawing. There were many giggles during the activity.

Trail Art Therapy March 27, 2024
With Easter weekend coming up, I brought a childhood tradition of mine in for the art activity today. Growing up my mom and I would make “Easter trees”. It always started with going for walks behind our house to see the spring buds and collect branches. We put the branches in a vase and decorated them with flowers, feathers and painted eggs etc.

To bring in a positive art therapy approach, I brought in cut outs of butterflies and Easter eggs to colour and then the intention was to write or draw a symbol on the back representing something you want to “hatch”/manifest/bring to fruition this spring.

In addition to the cutouts and drawing materials I brought branches and various materials to decorate with.

Colouring the cutouts took up most of our time, so we didn’t quite get to decorating branches.

Today, in honour of Earth Day this past Monday I read one of my favourite quotes from Walden’s Pond by Henry David Thoreau. It is about the importance of unexplored, wild nature and how special it is. I invited the group to share their fondest memories of being in nature and to draw that, or tell the story to the group. Another option was to make a nature collage from the nature images in magazines.



Conversation was lively, discussing nature and memories, cars and movies. There was not much engagement with art today, but I’m glad the subject sparked conversation.

Last day of our Earth day activity. We started with a rose/thorn or one word check in. Most individuals were happy to share and be heard for a few minutes. Then we got into the art while conversation continued between the members. Some enjoyed just flipping through the old national geographic magazines looking at the pictures from many years ago.

Finally a sunny day to make sun prints (cyanotypes)!



Today I introduced the activity right away so people had time to think of composition and arrange their objects appropriately. The activity was well received as something new to try and had a fun element of surprise with the final product. We used nature materials, found objects, the sun, and of course the special cyanotype paper to create art today. Once objects were arranged on the paper we brought them outside in the sun and placed a piece of glass on top so nothing moved around or flew away. Then we waited about 20min before removing the objects and rinsing the paper to develop the print. Once the prints were dry, one member even took it a step further by adding colour and detail with pencil crayons.

With the rain today we were unable to do cyanotype/sun printing. Instead we engaged with collage. I brought a range of pre cut images, objects, people and places and gave 4 options for activities. The first was to create a new face from parts of other faces. In my example I used facial features from a man, woman and dog. The second option was to do a creative self portrait using images and/or words that represent you. The 3rd was to do a collage to represent your past, present and future, or one of the 3. And the 4th was to make a collage of things you like/are inspired by.
