The kids are going trick or treating for candy, but don't forget that you deserve a treat too, so why not make it a massage!?

That's a wrap!
Thank you for following along during Massage Therapy Awareness Week.

I hope these posts have been informative and interesting for you all. I wanted to hi-light the evidence supporting massage therapy, how massage might benefit you, and the importance of inclusion, diversity and safety in patient-centred care.

For those who already have massage in your life, I hope this week has made you feel even more confident in your choice to include massage therapy in your healthcare.
For those who are new, I hope this encourages you to try massage and see if you get any of these benefits.

And to my fellow RMTs, I hope these posts ignite the passion for our important place in healthcare as much as it did for me. I am so proud to be part of this amazing community of RMT's!

If you think massage is right for you and are looking for an RMT, I am accepting new patients. Check out my booking site:

Massage Care for the Whole Family - Safe, Nurturing, Inclusive

Massage therapy isn't just for adults with injuries or athletes, it's for families - mothers, fathers, grandparents, children, and infants too!

My practice is built on the belief that every family member deserves safe, compassionate, skilled, respectful care. I create a space where you are heard, and treated with dignity during your care. I adapt techniques for every stage of life and strive to make everything accessible, gender-inclusive, trauma-informed, and body positive.

Whether you are recovering from childbirth, a teen with a sports injury, trying to stay strong in your older years, or anything in between, you are welcome here!

Want to know if massage is the right choice for a young child? For post-surgery? For pregnancy? Shoot me a message anytime 🙂

Where does massage therapy fit into the healthcare system of BC?

Massage Therapy isn't just about relaxation - It's a regulated health profession and plays an essential role in pain management, recovery, and wellness.

Here's what you should know:
✅Massage Therapists are well educated, licensed healthcare providers, regulated under the College of Complementary Health Professionals of BC to ensure safe, ethical, evidence-based care.
🤝Massage is often part of an integrated healthcare plan, collaborating and referring between many other healthcare professionals, such as physiotherapists, physicians, midwives, and other specialists.
🔄Massage can help take pressure off other parts of our healthcare system by helping manage pain without medication, reducing ER visits related to musculoskeletal issues, and supporting preventative care, instead of just reactive.

Not sure where massage fits into your healthcare plan?
Please reach out! I am happy to explain how massage can fit into your goals and work with the rest of your team!

Your Rights and Your Comfort:
Below are tips to help you advocate for yourself during a session.

Remember:
1. You have the right to be informed, give consent and to refuse at any point.
2. You may speak up at any time to change the pressure, position, or to stop.
3. Questions are always welcome. If you don't understand or want to know more details, just ask.
4. You deserve communication throughout the session, including checking on you throughout the treatment, and a debrief after.

You have the right to feel safe and respected when you come for a massage. In my clinic, I hope my patients always feel empowered to advocate their needs, safe to ask questions, and of course, respected and well informed.

Healthcare is strongest when it is inclusive, equitable, and safe.

In massage therapy, inclusion means: providing trauma-informed care (consent, empowerment), respecting patients' cultural norms and identities (modesty, touch preference, pronouns) and providing safe, effective care to everyone, regardless of abilities, body types, or background.

In my practice, I am committed to:
- Providing a safe, non-judgemental environment for all
- Communicating effectively about comfort levels, informed consent and preferred pronouns
- Offering modifications during treatment around draping, pressure, and accessibility
- Taking ongoing training related to trauma-informed practice (the images are some recent classes I've taken on the subject)

Inclusion is not optional - it is essential to safe healthcare

What does the research say about massage therapy?

Sure, it's "nice to have" and "great self care" but it can do so much more!

The research shows it can be beneficial in many aspects of health:
A review article found benefits with pain syndromes (arthritis, fibromyalgia), depression, immune function and conditions related to aging (Parkinson's, Dementia). https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27502797/
The NCCIH notes evidence that massage can help with low back pain, fibromyalgia, headaches and more. https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/massage-therapy-what-you-need-to-know

The available medical research I found shows mostly positive and beneficial results to those involved in Massage Therapy Studies.
If you want to know if massage is right for you, please reach out to me and I will help guide you with a treatment plan or alternative options of care.
