So many of us have grown up in families and school environments where emotions simply were not allowed. Not accepted, not welcomed, and immediately shut down. For many, emotions were never safe, and unfortunately, maybe even dangerous.
You’ve learned to survive in the environments you grew up in by eventually shutting down your own emotions, simply because this was the safest thing to do.
You learned to never cry, to not show your anger, and to not allow your emotions any expression… And if you're a parent, you're noticing the same pattern with your children: you automatically shut down their emotional experiences and expressions.
Nobody was there for you or with you when you had big feelings, and before you ever learned how to really be there for yourself, halting your emotions was engrained.
Into your mind, your body and your heart.
Sadness or crying was unacceptable and guilt took over anytime anger came up.
Now you’re grown, but you still feel like the child who was never understood, never protected, never emotionally cared for, and never allowed to feel what was true for you.
And nothing seems to be working anymore. Something deeper is erupting and demanding your attention, but you don’t know where to start… you don’t have the blueprint or the roadmap for how to show up for all of yourself.
