Researchers are beginning to understand that aging affects smell, taste, and cognitive function, so researchers investigated whether EOs like rosemary and caraway might help.

They tested over 400 people and found that as we age, our sense of smell and cognitive abilities (like memory, attention, and problem-solving) decline significantly, while taste declines more modestly. Importantly, poorer smell—especially the ability to recognize and identify odors—was linked to lower cognitive performance, suggesting it could be an early warning sign of brain decline.

When participants smelled rosemary and caraway EOs, they were still able to perceive them as pleasant, intense, and familiar even with aging, indicating these oils may stimulate sensory pathways that remain relatively preserved. Because these oils contain compounds that can affect the brain and nervous system, the findings suggest they could play a supportive role in maintaining sensory function and promoting healthy aging, although more research is needed to confirm real-world benefits.
