I wish I knew then what I know now…
I’ve been helping people lose weight for over 20 years — and I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way.
Mistakes like:
❌ Telling an amazing client that feeling light-headed during workouts was “normal” and that it would get better
❌ Believing weight loss was just a simple equation of calories in vs calories out
❌ Assuming that being overweight automatically meant overeating
The list goes on.
But over the years — and with a lot of learning, unlearning, and listening — I’ve learned so much. And I’m still learning.
If weight loss or feeling better in your body is a goal this year, here are 20 things I wish more people knew:
1. Weight loss isn’t 80% nutrition. It’s mostly mindset, supported by strategy.
2. If you’re “doing everything right” and not getting results, it may not be right for you.
3. Consistency over intensity. Every. Single. Time.
4. Diets don’t fix struggles with food — they usually reinforce them.
5. You can have thyroid symptoms even with “normal” lab values.
6. Your relationship with food is often a signal, not the problem.
7. You can love yourself and want to lose weight.
8, If something feels unsustainable, it probably is.
9. Asking for help is a strength — not a failure.
10. Change is hard. And you are capable of hard things.
11. Weight gain isn’t always about eating too much.
12. Supplements won’t fix poor sleep, stress, or under-fueling.
13. More exercise isn’t always better.
14. Less food isn’t always better either.
15. Constant fatigue and irritability aren’t “normal.”
16. Weight loss is possible during peri- and post-menopause.
17. Hormones matter — but they’re rarely the whole story.
18. Weight naturally fluctuates. Progress isn’t linear.
19. Setbacks are part of the process — plan for them.
20. You deserve to feel good in your body.
What would you add to the list?
