It can be confusing for parents when trying to decide to follow a clock based schedule or to go by wake windows. Many of the new apps and devices today follow wake windows and this is mainly so they can give a quick input to parents on average ranges for sleep based on baby’s age.

While it’s great to understand your little ones’ wake windows, it can become confusing for some parents to follow them as your day and baby’s sleep is constantly changing.

Why a clock based schedule ?

Around 4 months of age your little one’s sleep becomes more organized and they are ready to do those longer stretches of sleep for naps and night time. It is at this time that we recommend families look at a clock based schedule for babies.

The main reason for this is to provide that predictability to the baby’s body as well as to your own schedule. Our bodies naturally follow a 24 hour clock, which controls changes in the body that help us to sleep. Once babies are over 4 months they start to follow those patterns called circadian rhythms. If we put them to bed when their body is naturally ready for sleep, not only can it help them settle to sleep easier but they are also more likely to get that deep restorative sleep that makes them better rested throughout the day.

Following a clock based schedule also helps to sync baby’s internal clock. Their body will naturally start to know when sleep happens which again will make them more tired and they will then start to show those tired cues at predictable times.

Why Montessori beds are not safe for babies:

Montessori beds, also known as floor beds, have gained popularity among parents who follow the Montessori educational philosophy. The Montessori approach to parenting emphasizes independence, freedom of movement, and respect for a child’s natural development.

While Montessori beds may work well for older toddlers and children, the American Academy of Pediatrics defines a safe sleep space for children 12 months and under, to be in a crib, travel crib or bassinet depending on age and weight.

Read about some of the reasons why Montessori beds are not safe for babies on our blog at the link in our bio.

In the article, there are helpful links to additional safe sleep resources as well.

There’s more to sleep training than you think: it’s not just a set method or specific plan. Keep reading to find out more!

Sleep training is not just about choosing the method. Often people automatically think sleep training means cry it out (CIO) or no cry methods, when in fact there is so much more to the entire sleep training plan than just the method.

We factor in the baby’s age and readiness, baby’s sleep environment, how baby’s sleeping throughout the day, is baby following an age appropriate bedtime and bedtime routine etc.

Once all those tools are in place, we can then choose the best method for both baby and parents.

So, Are You Ready For Sleep Training?

Sleep training is a choice and it’s not the right choice for all families, and that’s okay. If what you are doing works for your family and you are able to remain a well-rested family unit, than no one should be convincing you to change.

However, when you and your baby are overtired and you’re not able to function as a healthy family unit, then perhaps you’ve reached the point when it’s time to make some changes.

How to handle the 18-month sleep regression

Unfortunately, this one tends to be one of the most difficult sleep regressions to deal with for one main reason. Discipline. Unlike the 4 month and 8-10 month sleep regression, at 18 months, disciplining and limit setting may need to happen. Why? Well, earlier regressions don’t have anything to do with defiant behavior. Now, it does.

Your child is gaining independence and exploring a wonderful new world. Things like eating with a spoon all by themselves, or repeatedly taking off their shirt and trying to put it back on is very exciting! They would much rather explore than sleep.

Resistance to naps is very common at this age. They are pushing their boundaries and testing limits and once again, you are likely wondering what you can do.

🛑 Now is not the time to drop naps!

Here’s how to handle it:

✅ Be patient. As hard as it is – the best thing you can do is wait the sleep regression out.

✅ Stick to your routine as best as possible. As much as you can, keep their bedtime and naps in their bed (a consistent place to sleep is key), implement an early bedtime, keep up a regular routine – and stay with it.

✅ Don’t do anything drastic. Even if your toddler seems extremely resistant to naps, dropping them altogether is not recommended. This will likely cause your child to become even more tired and cranky and even more resistant to all sleep.

✅ Consider sleep training. If you’ve been struggling with sleep issues for a while, chances are it’s because you may need to implement a little bit of sleep training and it’s probably not due to a regression.

Remember, it might feel like nothing is working or you’re doing everything wrong – but you’re not!

All types of regressions can occur with even the best sleepers. If you stay consistent and keep practicing the healthy sleep habits with your routine, sleep will return.

There are a few reasons why it can be easy for parents to miss this drowsy window followed by the overtired zone.

As you all know, I like to push for early bedtimes. Making sure a child goes down early enough, and at their proper biological times is something parents need to focus on.

Sleeping at these biologically appropriate times will allow your child to get the best restorative sleep possible.

The better rested they are during the day and when going to bed, the better they will sleep at night.

Missed sleep can complicate matters even more. We as parents need to understand that babies need a lot more sleep than we do. They can’t function off of 7 or 8 hours like we can. If your child isn’t getting the nap transistions throughout the day that they need, and this is happening consecutively, they will accrue what’s called a sleep debt.

As this sleep debt increases his body can experience stress, which releases adrenaline and cortisol throughout the body and causes extreme energy. Hello hyper overtired child! They will now fight you on sleep, wake up numerous times throughout the night, and super early in the morning. Your child experiences the feeling of being more and more tired, but their body is feeling more and more stimulated from the adrenaline and cortisol coursing through it. The sleepless cycle has been created.

Another way to help avoid this zone and release the “good” sleep hormone melatonin, is to practice a consistent bedtime routine. In order to fall asleep adults and children need some consistent wind down time. It’s tough to just turn the sleep switch on and go to bed. Practicing a similar routine before each sleep phase helps prepare your child for sleep and actually cues the brain to release melatonin to allow your child to get drowsy.

A consistent bedtime routine can be practiced from day one.

If we started talking more about what sleeping through the night really meant, maybe parents would feel better about nighttime sleep instead of like a failure.

We’ve all spent *years* not realizing what sleeping through the night actually is and I don’t want anyone else to go through that experience.

So let’s normalize understanding what it really means! Keep reading and let me know what you think in the comments below.

(P.S. If you’re ready to chat more with us about your baby’s sleep, just tap the link in my bio to book your free discovery call!)

What ‘Sleeping Through The Night’ Really Means

‘Sleeping through the night’ – is one of the most confusing terms in the entire sleep training world. We all wake throughout the night, sometimes partially and sometimes fully. You don’t sleep straight through the night and neither does your baby.

Instead of believing that the term ‘sleeping through the night’ means your baby sleeps a full 10-12 straight hours without waking, let’s redefine it to be that your baby can sleep UNASSISTED throughout the night at around six months of age. This means that your baby is able to transition between sleep cycles without crying and without needing you to help them fall back asleep. Rethinking this terminology may help to take some of the pressure off when your baby does wake throughout the night. If they can fall back to sleep on their own, that is sleeping through the night.

Sleep And The Toddler Years (save this post and keep reading!)

There are some sleep challenges that can pop up at any age and any stage. However, the toddler years are unique and challenging for so many reasons, and these special circumstances tend to spill over into the sleep sphere as well.

If you have a toddler or are approaching this stage with your little one, swipe to find out more about the five top sleep issues you may face in this distinctive stage or read the entire post on our blog on our site.

A lot of toddler sleep issues stem from your little one pushing boundaries and exerting their independence. While both of these are healthy and age appropriate, it can result in a chaotic and frustrating bedtime. It can be really helpful to take a step back and make a plan to get things back on track before you end up in another battle of wills at eight o’clock at night. Plan to set limits, be consistent and follow through so that you set your child up for success. A little planning and patience will go a long way in making bedtime a positive nightly routine again.

The holiday season is upon us and if you have children in tow, you may be feeling anxious about your child’s sleep getting off track.

The magic of the holiday season can also look like a jam-packed calendar, more hours in the car and gatherings with unpredictable end times. You know how much sleep your little one needs, and you may be asking yourself questions like, how will I maintain my baby’s nap schedule, or should keep my child up late on special occasions?

We do have some tips! Here’s how to have fun during the holidays and protect your family’s sleep.

❄️ Prioritize your schedule around your most sleep sensitive child (read more about this on our website)

❄️ Communicate your needs and ask for help

❄️ The 80/20 Rule

Swipe to read more about the second and third suggestions, or read the entire blog post with even more tips at the link in our bio

Maintaining healthy sleep habits as a family during the holiday season means not saying yes or no to everything. Change is inevitable as your family grows. That change may look like everyone gathering at your home this year so your child can sleep in their familiar environment. Change may look like doing a brunch instead of a dinner. Change doesn’t mean you have any less fun during the holidays, it’s just different with small children.
