Dianna Tarbell - Seven Leaf General Manager had the opportunity to speak with The Globe and Mail to discuss how Indigenous Women are leading the cannabis industry - and hoping to change it for the better.

Non-white women make up only two per cent of executives and directors in the Canadian cannabis industry. It’s a lack of diversity that’s bad for business

From the boardroom to the grow room, Dianna Tarbell is helping change the face of the cannabis industry.

“Being an Indigenous woman, residing on the territory of Akwesasne, I am very fortunate to come from a matrilineal culture. Strong, vibrant women are leaders in government, business and the arts, and it is neither a surprise nor an anomaly,” says Dianna Tarbell, general manager of Seven Leaf, Canada’s first 100% Indigenous owned and operated Producer. “When you grow up surrounded by these role models, it gives you the courage to undertake new challenges.”

That’s not to say she breezed into her leadership position. Tarbell’s trial by fire was the gaming industry, where her voice and management style was not the norm. (Once in a room full of over 100 general managers, she counted fewer than 10 women in the mix.) But by leading through mentorship and encouragement, while fostering the hidden talents her experienced eye sees in people, she now hires predominantly from within the Akwesasne community.

As the pandemic settles, she anticipates many more women entering the industry as a whole. “From sales and marketing to cultivation and operations, I hope women from my community and across Canada are inspired to join us as we continue to build the sector.” To read more and hear about other influential women in the cannabis industry visit the 🔗 below.

Our Milk & Cookiez pre-roll has been very popular since entering the recreational cannabis market. Milk & Cookiez is currently on the shelves of 140 retail dispensaries across Ontario.
Huge shoutout to Nate and his team for being able to produce over 4000 units a day to keep up with the high demand. 🥛 🍪

Our Story

Seven Leaf Is a proud First Nations cannabis producer under the Cannabis Act. Four years in the making, Seven Leaf, the first Indigenous owned and operated licensed cannabis producer in Canada is preparing at its first harvest, expected to be available in the Spring of 2019. Since then, Seven Leaf has passed through tough security screening of its key executives and received approval for its business plans which include re-purposing a former water bottling plant in Akwesasne.

We are deeply committed to family community and have created a socially responsible company that strives to be a leader in business practices and community contributions.

Located in the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory on Cornwall Island Ontario, the company is led by an experienced team from the Akwesasne community with diverse expertise in enforcement and the law, horticulture, business administration and pharmaceuticals.
