🩺💙 January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

Did you know cervical cancer is often preventable with regular screening?

If you’re 25 or older, have a cervix, and have ever been sexually active, cervical screening helps find changes early, before cancer develops.

Ontario now uses HPV testing, which is more accurate and means most people only need screening every 5 years (previously known as a pap test).

If you’re unsure whether you’re due, this is a great time to check and book.

🏥🤒 Not sure where to go for care when you’re sick? We’re here to help.

Emergency Departments are for true emergencies (like severe pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness, or serious injuries). For most health concerns, especially when it’s not life-threatening, there are other places that can help you faster.

✅ Call or visit your family doctor or nurse practitioner first – they know your health history and can guide you.

✅ If you need care outside regular hours, primary care after-hours clinics are available in the community.

✅ You can also call Health811 (dial 8-1-1) for free advice from a registered nurse 24/7.

Getting the right care in the right place helps keep Emergency Departments available for those who need them most.

MMFHT is proud to have kinesiologists on our team. The College of Kinesiology (COKO) is doing a short survey to understand the role the COKO plays for registered kinesiologists and protecting the public in health care.
If you’ve seen Theresa or Sandy in the past, consider taking the survey.

November is Falls Prevention Month! 🦶

Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults in Canada? About 1 in 3 adults over age 65 experiences a fall each year, and many of these incidents can be prevented through small but important changes.

This year’s theme — Move, Improve, Remove — encourages all Canadians to:

✅ Move your body: stay active to build strength, balance, and flexibility.

💊 Improve your health: review medications, vision, and hearing regularly with your healthcare provider.

🏡 Remove hazards: keep floors clear, add handrails, and ensure good lighting at home.

At Minto-Mapleton Family Health Team, our providers work with patients to improve mobility, reduce risk, and maintain independence. If you or a loved one are concerned about falls, speak with your care provider — our team can help connect you with local programs and resources.

Together, we can take steps toward safer living! 💛

It’s Nurse Practitioner Week, and we’re proud to celebrate the incredible NPs who care for our Minto-Mapleton community.

In our Family Health Team more than 3600 patients have the privilege of experiencing care from a Nurse Practitioner. They diagnose, order tests, prescribe medications, and provide comprehensive primary care with exceptional compassion and expertise.

Across Canada, NPs continue to strengthen access to care. Studies show NP-led primary care delivers high-quality outcomes and patient satisfaction, and their advanced training allows them to manage complex health needs with a full scope of practice.

At Minto-Mapleton FHT, our NPs are essential to the care we provide. We’re grateful every day for their commitment, leadership, and the difference they make in the lives of our patients.

Thank you to our amazing Nurse Practitioners — we couldn’t do what we do without you. 💙

Last week was National Pain Awareness Week, where we recognize the millions of Canadians living with chronic pain and the impact it can have on their daily life.

From arthritis and cancer to invisible or undiagnosed illnesses that aren’t always well understood, chronic pain is more common than you’d think.

At the Minto-Mapleton Family Health Team, we know that living with ongoing pain can be challenging, but you don’t have to have it alone. Our team can help you learn strategies to manage pain, improve function, and support overall well-being.

If chronic pain is something you or someone you care about struggles with, reach out to your team to learn about programs and supports that may help.

Together, we can raise awareness, reduce stigma, and build a community of understanding.

This year’s theme: All Voices for Safer Care.
