Common Pitfall #1: Using pre-rehearsed lines

“Please take a seat in my private counselling area where everything you say is private and confidential…” “that must be so bothersome for you, I will do my best to try to help you” “thank you for including us in the circle of care” “how do you feel about your pregnancy?”.

A lot of our students come from courses that teach pre-rehearsed lines. These lines are time consuming and it is obvious to the OSCE assessors that you have merely memorized lines and are not using authentic communication.

Communication is a major part of the OSCE exam; there are many different communication techniques you can employ to help improve your process and communication score. Pre-rehearsed lines is not one of them!

A common question I get from students:
“How many cases do I need to fully solve to pass the exam?”

The PEBC website states the results vary based on the difficulty of the exam and how students perform in each case. There is no exact number listed, no target number of cases to fully solve. Ultimately, you need to perform better than your peers!

Think about this, if you are taking one of the big box OSCE courses, you are likely going to be an average OSCE student. There is little room to differentiate your process and communication skills when you are learning in a large group. Joining a smaller OSCE prep course will give you the edge to perform better than the average, thus improving your chances at success!

Instead of focusing on how the exam is graded - put your efforts into learning from Canadian trained graduates who focus on process, communication, scope of practice and critical thinking.
