WARNING
Lambton Public Health is sharing that medetomidine is being found in higher numbers of fentanyl samples. While it has not yet been confirmed that medetomidine is present locally, we would like to share the following information as there are unanticipated negative effects associated with medetomidine.
• Medetomidine may cause hallucinogenic effects. These hallucinations are described as "intense," "trippy" and "psychedelic." Some reported visual and auditory hallucinations have been reported followed by passing out. Others experienced vivid nightmares lasting 8 hours or dissociative effects.
• Medetomidine can cause severe and potentially life-threatening high blood pressure if someone stops taking it abruptly. Other withdrawal symptoms reported include tachycardia, hypertension, extreme agitation, tremors, and vomiting that can last for days. Withdrawal from medetomidine can cause dangerous cardiovascular instability requiring medical management.
