Next week! Hear from Dr. Jennifer Leason about her original research examining the costs and impacts of birth evacuation in Indigenous communities.

Dr. Leason uses policy analysis and national travel data to show how displacement from community affects families, midwives, and care systems. Her work invites a reimagining of investment in Indigenous-led midwifery and local birth services as a pathway to wellbeing, continuity, and self-determination.

We’re heading to Ottawa this week to advocate for a coordinated national framework for women’s health. Bill S-243 calls for strengthened primary care and prevention across the lifespan. This is exactly why Indigenous midwifery matters.

Indigenous women have higher rates of STBBIs, perinatal complications, and maternal-infant morbidity and mortality than non-Indigenous women in Canada, driven by systemic barriers that limit access to timely, culturally safe, and community-based care. Indigenous midwives make it faster and easier for Indigenous women and gender-diverse people to access primary care close to home.

🌿 Land-Based Learning in Action! 🌿

From September 28 to October 4, 2025, our midwife chiskutimwaakanch joined Elders for an unforgettable week on the land. Together, they built a traditional wigwam, learned teachings about its cultural significance, and shared stories.

Highlights included:
✅ Teamwork in constructing the wigwam from frame to finish
✅ Rabbit snaring and preparation workshops
✅ Teachings on peat moss and its traditional uses
✅ Nature walks exploring medicinal plants and trees
✅ Hands-on traditional medicine workshops

This experience was about culture, honoring the wisdom of our Elders, and nurturing Eeyou/Eenou midwives that will provide the best care possible for Eeyou Istchee.

Thank you to everyone who helped make it possible!

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, an opportunity to raise awareness about this form of cancer and the importance of the Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. HPV is almost exclusively the cause of cervical cancer. In some cases, symptoms may not appear until the cancer is more advanced. Regular screenings, protected s*x and HPV vaccination are among the most effective ways to protect yourself and your partner.
