GIFTS (Gulf Island Families Together Society has several openings for the role of Support Worker.
As a support worker you work one on one with the individual, helping them with planning, personal care, and their day to day commitments and programming. Support workers will work as members of a team with the individual, their family and/or caregivers. Reporting to the Executive Director of GIFTS and supported individual.

Gulf Islands Families Together Society (GIFTS) is a charitable non-profit organization that supports people with diverse abilities by recognizing and facilitating their right to employment, social, recreational and educational access, and housing in their community. GIFTS strengthens community on Salt Spring by supporting people with disabilities to apply their individual talents and experience to tackling challenges such as staffing shortages, social inclusion, skills development and housing. Governed by a volunteer board of directors, consisting of family members, self-advocates and community members.
Roles and Responsibilities
o Develop familiarity with the needs of the individuals who require support relating to employment and their interests or community involvement.
o Lead/participate in day-to-day group programming activities on site at GIFTS
o Research and secure employment or volunteer related experiences when familiarity of the individual you support is obtained.
o Assist with individual support needs when employment or volunteer experiences need to be chosen.
o Assist in areas of need that the individual requires such as personal care, skill development, time management, literacy, numeracy and communication.
o Enhance the learning experience of the individual by allowing them to learn through modeling tasks and appropriately removing support when they are ready to complete the task on their own.
o Participate in the development of the individual’s plan with his or her team and monitor the implementation of the plan.
o Provide feedback on an ongoing basis to the individual and their family on issues relating to the support of the individual.
o Respect the confidentiality of the individual that you support and their family; discuss issues that are relevant and only with those who need to know.
o Provide transportation for individuals, as necessary.
o Identify areas of concern to the Executive Director, if unresolved with an employer, individual, or family.
o Participate in staff meetings that are scheduled to address issues relating to all participants and employees.
o Provide flexibility of Support Worker hours, by mutual agreement, when support or meeting attendance is scheduled other than a regular scheduled time.
o Participate in the general duties when at GIFTS 152 McPhillips. This includes, but is not limited to general tidying, kitchen clean up, recycling with clients, and general care of the space.
o Fulfill any other tasks as may be required to support individuals and their families.
Employee Wages and Reimbursement
o Wages will be established at $24.85 per hour, with a probation period of 3 months for all permanent part-time employees. If the employee successfully completes one year of service their wage will be raised to $25.85
o Employees will be paid an additional 2% in lieu of benefits on top of their wage upon completion of the 3-month probation period.
o During the first five years of employment, employees are paid an additional 4% in lieu of vacation.
o Upon completion of the probationary period, if the employee fulfills 15 hours per week or more, they will be eligible for health benefits.
Travel
o Employees may bill the society for travel related to the participant’s programming activities.
o In this role the parents/caregiver has requested the employee to do home pick up or/drop off, and this mileage will be billed to the parents/caregiver.
o Mileage is to be reimbursed at $0.61/ kilometer.
All staff must obtain a Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Screening, a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, a driver’s abstract, as well as first aid certification.
