This 83-year-old curmudgeon just became my life coach.

Let's be real, most books about aging are either sentimental tear-jerkers or boring manuals about estate planning. The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen is neither.

Hendrik is 83¼ (the ¼ matters, apparently) and living in a nursing home in Amsterdam. He's bored by the whiners at dinner, annoyed by the petty rules, and terrified of becoming one of the "old people" who've given up. So he starts a diary. And a club. And basically becomes a one-man rebellion against the idea that life stops when you move into assisted living.

It's funny. Like, laugh-out-funny. But it's also real, the kind of real that makes you put the book down and stare at the wall for a minute.

Here are 5 things Hendrik taught me about sticking around and actually living:

1. "Old" is a mindset, not a number
Hendrik's best friend Evert says his philosophy is simple: "The only point of being alive is to kill time as pleasantly as possible. The trick is not to take anything too seriously." These guys have walkers and heart conditions, but they're out here causing mischief, going on outings, and living bigger than people half their age.

2. Whining is a choice, and it's contagious
Hendrik's biggest pet peeve? Complainers. The residents who do nothing but moan about the food, the staff, their aches. So he starts the Old But Not Dead Club with one golden rule: No whining. They plan outings, try new things, and actually do stuff instead of just waiting around. Turns out, joy is a team sport.

3. Friendship doesn't retire
The friendships in this book hit different. Hendrik, Evert, and Eefje show up for each other in ways that would put most of us to shame. They bicker, they tease, they take care of each other when things get hard. It's a reminder that we never outgrow our need for people who get us.

4. You're never too old for a crush
When Eefje moves in, Hendrik turns into a teenage boy. Polishing his shoes. Grooming what's left of his hair. Bringing flowers. It's adorable and awkward and so human. Love doesn't check ID at the door.

5. Grief and joy share the same house
Here's the thing about this book: it'll make you cackle on one page and reach for tissues on the next. Because that's how life actually works. People get sick. Friends leave. Bodies fail. But somehow, Hendrik shows you that joy isn't about avoiding the hard stuff, it's about grabbing every good moment while you can.

If you liked A Man Called Ove, you'll probably love this. If you have a grandparent, read it and call them after. If you're human and planning on getting older someday? Definitely read it.

🔥 When did you stop trusting your inner fire?🔥

In Irish, there is a word for the kind of trust that steadies a life: Muinín.
(MWEE-neen)

Muinín means trust. Confidence. Faith in your own knowing.

In early Ireland, trust was not casual. Under the Brehon laws, a person’s word shaped their honor, their standing, their relationships. Agreements were spoken, witnessed, and expected to be upheld. To be trusted was strength. To keep faith was power. Communities were built on it.

But muinín was never only about trusting others. It reached inward too. It meant living in alignment with your own word. Listening when your body spoke. Respecting what you knew in your bones.

Somewhere between childhood and adulthood, many of us were taught to doubt our own signals. To override hunger. To ignore exhaustion. To push through pain. To second guess our instincts. We learned to look outward for permission instead of inward for guidance.

We live in a world that profits from your doubt.
If you do not trust yourself, you will buy answers.
If you do not trust your body, you will fight it.
If you do not trust your pace, you will exhaust yourself trying to keep up.

Muinín is the refusal to keep abandoning yourself.

It often feels ordinary. It feels like paying attention. Like slowing down long enough to notice what is happening inside you. Like choosing one small action that aligns with your own truth instead of someone else’s expectations.

If you trusted your body when it told you to rest, even when the world said push harder, there was muinín in that.

If you listened to the quiet voice inside you that said this is not right, even when you could not explain why, there was muinín in that.

If you chose your own pace instead of racing someone else’s timeline, there was muinín in that.

If you said no and let that be enough, there was muinín in that.

If you believed that your limits, your pain, your needs were real and worthy of care, there was deep, steady muinín in that too.

This is how trust rebuilds. Not in dramatic declarations, but in consistency. In the simple act of believing your own lived experience.

You have lived inside your body your entire life.

You have gathered wisdom no one else carries.

Trusting yourself may feel unfamiliar at first. That does not mean it is wrong. It means you are remembering something you were never meant to lose.

And now, take that fire that has been quietly burning inside you all along. Stand tall. Let your shoulders remember their own strength. Walk into your life fully awake, carrying every scar, every lesson, every quiet victory you have survived. Speak with the authority of your own knowing. Move with the confidence that your choices matter. Choose boldly, even if the world has trained you to doubt yourself.

The world may not notice at first. It may scoff, it may rush past, it may try to shrink you. That does not matter. You are still rising. You are still showing up. You are still here. Every step, every breath, every small act of courage builds the foundation of someone who will not be shaken by noise or judgment.

Remember this: you have endured storms no one saw. You have faced battles no one acknowledged. You have walked paths no one could follow. And still, you rise. Today, tomorrow, in every quiet moment that asks you to stand again, you rise.

That is enough. That is power.

That is life lived with muinín.

🌀When the world tells you you’re not enough, remember who you really are.

In Irish, there is a word that touches the very heart of who you are: Anam
(pronounced AH-nahm)

In old Irish belief, the anam was more than a life force. It was your essence, the spark that makes you you. Ancient Celts believed the soul was eternal and deeply connected to family, ancestors, the land, and the cycles of nature. Stories and law honored deeds, skill, and bravery, but they also celebrated the life lived from the anam, the kindness, courage, loyalty, and love flowing from your core.

Anam means soul. Not just the mind or the body, not what the world sees or measures. Not how fast, strong, small, or large your body is. Not how close you are to some impossible standard.

It is the part of you that loves, that feels, that belongs simply by existing.

Today it can be hard to remember that. Modern beauty standards, social media, and constant comparisons make us measure ourselves by what we look like or how we move through the world. We see flawless bodies, polished images, and endless shoulds and think we are not enough.

And yet you are here. You are breathing. You are living. You are present. You are giving love. You are enduring, creating, trying, surviving.

That is your anam in motion. That is your soul shining exactly as it is.

If you moved your body today without criticizing it, there was anam in that.
If you told yourself something kind, even quietly, there was anam in that.
If you noticed a strength or quality in yourself and honored it, there was anam in that.
If you allowed yourself to enjoy a moment without judgment, there was anam in that.
If you smiled at your reflection or acknowledged your own courage, there was deep, quiet anam in that too.

Every small act of self-kindness, every gentle thought, every moment you chose patience and compassion for yourself carries anam.

Your soul is whole. Your soul is enough. It is not defined by what you do, how you look, or what anyone else thinks. It is defined by the love, care, and presence you give yourself.

Look at yourself with gentle eyes today. Love yourself exactly as you are. That is your anam shining through.

Remember, the light you carry inside is already enough for the world.

It’s a beautiful Sunday and my choice was to first replenish my body…
my mind…
my heart…
my energy…
my intentions

I came outside with a blanket and coffee, embracing the sunshine and chill in the air, my dogs lounging alongside, the chattering of the birds, the wind whispering through the trees.
I placed my hand on my heart and other hand on my abdomen…
closed my eyes gently and simply took intentional breaths…
after awhile i caught myself contemplating this simple sentence between each breath.

Slow breath in…..
“ What do I want in this life?”
Slow breath out…….

Slow breath in…..
“What do I want in this life?”
Slow breath out….

Slow breath in…..
“ What do I want in this life?”
Slow breath out…….

Slow breath in…..
“What do I want in this life?”
Slow breath out…

Slow breath in…..
“ What do I want in this life?”
Slow breath out…….

Slow breath in…..
“What do I want in this life?”
Slow breath out…

Slow breath in…..
“ What do I want in this life?”
Slow breath out…….

Slow breath in…..
“What do I want in this life?”
Slow breath out…

Slow breath in…..
“ What do I want in this life?”
Slow breath out…….

Slow breath in…..
“What do I want in this life?”
Slow breath out…

Eventually the most beautiful moments of feelings, colours, visions and emotions began to float in!

How will you replenish today?

Laura ❤️
