It’s been a long winter, for many rowers we are right around the corner of the on-water season!

Like other endurance sports, you train day in and day out. My varsity rowing career taught me exactly how important it is to have a journal to keep the details of my training plan, my workouts, and my thoughts/journals all together. When you get to that race, there is nothing more reassuring than taking a moment to look at your training log and see all the training you put in. In your hands you’ll see all work that you did to get to this moment, and know when you row up to that line you did everything possible to get there.

***WHAT DRIVES YOU? WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?***

Whatever you do, you probably spend a lot of time doing it. Countless hours in the gym, on the track, in the pool, on the field, or on the water. Maybe you wake up at 5 AM everyday to get your training in. No matter what it is you do, it’s hard work... So why do you do it?

Finding your why is one of the biggest sources of motivation for athletes. It’s intrinsic; comes from within and it is always there with you. Understanding why you do what you do makes challenging choices become easier because every time you make the difficult choice to wake up early, go to that hard virtual training session, or maybe even train alone during the pandemic you’re investing into yourself and your why. Without competition, a lot of people have had to rethink their why. It’s a dynamic and ever changing part of your athletic journey. It’s a guiding principle which helps focus you and direct your goals.

The AthLog is focused on setting goals around your why so that you set goals that are aligned with your values and excite you!

I’m a firm believer in using a physical logbook to track my training. Before working on the AthLog, I was absolutely tied to my lined notebook. I thought that it was the single best way to hold everything! It was blank so I could create custom layouts, designs, and write anything I wanted; it was cheap; and easy to carry. I spent hours working on my journal, but it wasn’t without its issues. The most significant problem was without structure, I didn’t track consistently, I didn’t measure using the same metrics every time, and I became to attached to the idea that my journal had to be perfect or I shouldn’t do it at all. This “all or nothing” mentality didn’t allow me to make the most out of my little lined notebook! I found myself mindlessly filling out its pages, never to look back or reflect on what I did.

I looked a long time for a structured journal that would fit my needs, but none of them could cover everything I needed as a varsity athlete. Many focused simply on losing weight or dieting and didn’t have the flexibility I needed to adjust or add to accommodate for my needs. I decided to take into my own hands creating a book that gives people the structure to consistently track and measure progress but also do so mindfully and purposefully to make the most out of their hard work. The AthLog’s minimalist design allows for the customization and individual design. Structured pace & weight charts allow you to track and measure your progress by using the same metrics. Goal setting and reflection sheets give you direction and purpose.
