Screening all new parents for depression is important, regardless of gender. Many non-birth parents struggle with the changing roles that come with the birth of their child, and should be supported through that process.

"Although many new dads experience depressive symptoms, few know how to identify the signs or talk about their struggles," one researcher said.

Short, simple movements are a great way to get started for those who have been sedentary.

The “un-movement syndrome” abounds in today’s world. However, while most people recognize this fact, there is a huge intimidation factor in getting started for people new to health and fitness programs. Our advice, based on tons of behavioral research, is to begin with easy to perform, simple movement. For many of our pain clients we recommend setting the alarm on their phone for an “odd” time period - maybe 7 minutes or 11 minutes or 2.5 minutes and then move. The rules are the movement must be pain-free (this may mean very slow or very small ranges of motion) and interesting enough to pay attention. Do this for a week and you will often find that the desire to move a bit more becomes apparent. Keep it small, simple and consistent.

I’m so grateful to work with an amazingly supportive woman, who also has the knowledge and wisdom as a Naturopathic Doctor to guide her patients towards their healthiest selves.

I see a lot of women in my practice who don't love their bodies. For some it's because of their fertility challenges, for other it's weight that they can't keep off, it's achy joints, horrible menstrual cycles, digestive pain, body image struggles, etc.
Loving the body goes a long way towards healing.
Don't love your body?
Start by taking a deep breath. Feel your lungs filling, putting oxygen into your blood. Now feel the pulse in your wrist. That is your heart pumping blood throughout your body. Look at a recent cut - see how it has healed overtime, the scar starting to form.
These little pieces are incredible.
Your body is incredible.

At our clinic, we see a lot of young families in the early stages of having kids. While it's a thrilling time, there are overwhelming moments along the way, especially when a new baby arrives. This is a very smart set of questions to answer BEFORE you have a baby. There is so much to navigate once baby arrives that it can be really helpful to have a game plan ahead of time.

What a fantastic list! Postpartum can be so intense. It’s a great idea to have a game plan.

Feeling worried? Overwhelmed? Focused breathing is a great tool to use when stress and anxiety spike.

Stress reduction, insomnia prevention, emotion control, improved attention—certain breathing techniques can make life better. But where do you start?

As we head into fall and winter sports, it’s good to know the best response to muscle injuries. Is ice really the best way to heal?

There's little evidence ice is good for injuries like rolled ankles. Now, some researchers suspect it may delay the healing process.

Men! Build a habit of caring for your bodies and your brains, in whatever form that takes for you. Don’t wait for unbearable stress or pain. It doesn’t make you tougher, and it could potentially cut your lifespan.

Ever notice how many fewer men are into the self-care game compared to women? How often do you hear men chatting about the most recent buzz in healthcare, or about their most recent experience at a massage or acupuncture appointment?

Surely, health and wellness tips and practices are just as valuable to men as women - women just tend to be greater participants in the self-care game! It also doesn’t help that societal tradition and expectation of machismo is always looming. Personally, we think it’s time for a change. 🙌🏼

In honour of Men’s Health Week, we’re here to promote preventative health measures and male self-care practices. If that special “he” in your life isn’t well versed in said practices, we’re here to help!

We understand balancing career and family can be mentally and physically taxing, yet, not often shared. Stresses accumulate over time and can develop into some serious health complications. Guys, did you know simple breathing exercises can be a great stress management tool? Taking 5 to breathe can be major for body and mind. If you can’t pencil it in, schedule an hour in your week to receive treatment – most of our treatments are covered by insurance! Show up, relax and let us take care of the rest.

Ah, a male’s love for food. With the mayhem of life, it’s often men eat on the run, late at night, or lack experience in the kitchen which can lead to vulnerability with poor food choices. Know someone who may need food guidance? Send them to a Naturopathic Doctor or Holistic Nutritionist to help with meal planning or fill in the gaps they may have in their diets.

To all the men out there: health is a huge umbrella term that includes wellness checkups with the doctor, blood and cholesterol work and weight numbers however, there’s more to the equation. Emotional health, physical and emotional stressors are very common hurdles that DO NOT indicate weakness; we strongly believe these concerns should be addressed publicly and with health professionals. The importance of compassionate healthcare, self-care treatments, male friendships and peer support aren’t encouraged enough!

Including men in the wellness world is something we’re all about. It’s important to encourage men to have the confidence they need to take charge of their health and take better care of themselves.
