Postpartum contractions (often called afterpains) are your uterus working hard to return to its pre-pregnancy size. This tightening helps slow bleeding by closing off the blood vessels where the placenta was attached.

Many parents notice these cramps most in the first few days after birth, especially while breastfeeding. That’s because breastfeeding releases oxytocin, which tells the uterus to contract.

To stay comfortable, you can try using a warm compress, slow breathing, or an over-the-counter pain reliever if it’s safe and approved by your healthcare provider. For most people, afterpains fade within several days to about a week.

It’s completely normal for these sensations to catch you by surprise, and you’re not alone if they feel intense at times. Be gentle with yourself and remember that your body is doing meaningful healing work. 🤍

C-section recovery takes time, and caring for your scar is an important part of the healing process. Here’s what helps most:

💛 Keep It Gentle
Clean with mild products, pat dry, and give the area space to breathe.

💛 Protect + Be Patient
Healing takes time. Soft, high-waisted clothing can help reduce friction, and protecting your scar from sun exposure supports long-term healing.

💛 Consider Pelvic Floor Therapy
A pelvic floor therapist can support scar tissue mobility and comfort—ask about booking around your 6-week checkup.

Most of all, honour your body and honour your journey. You’re healing in more ways than one!

So much of postpartum support happens quietly in the background. Yes, postpartum doulas help with the practical things like newborn care, feeding, sleep questions, and hands-on support in your home. But the part you don’t always see is often the most transformative.

We’re there to listen, to hold space for your feelings, to help you make sense of the ups and downs, and to remind you that you’re doing an incredible job — even on the days you’re not sure you are.

The real heart of doula work is nurturing you, building your confidence, and helping you feel grounded during one of the biggest transitions of your life.

You deserve support that sees the whole picture: your healing, your baby’s needs, and the wellbeing of your growing family. 🤍
