What does it mean to be “aware”? This is a question that St. Teresa of Avila asks in her work The Interior Castle and one I’ve asked myself every time I sit down to write.
Right now, I’m listening to some beautiful, evocative music (by Stars of the Lid) and am aware of how deeply it’s moving me. I’m aware of a stirring in my soul manifested as tears welling up and a deepening of my breath. I suddenly find that I’ve stopped writing and listening to something rising from deep within me — something that wants to be acknowledged.
This is the kind of awareness that I’m exploring in the first “room” of my Seven Rooms of Memoir course: the Room of Awareness. Here, we simply pay attention to what wants to come forward to be seen, heard, and witnessed.
For me, this kind of awareness is deeply spiritual. It’s an act of devotion that I believe St. Teresa would have understood.
This Tuesday (May 5th) at 11 am, I'm diving deep into the architecture of the soul and story. If you want to see the map of the Seven Rooms, join us.
