Dear Doctor,
In February 2017, the American College of Physicians released their latest update to “Noninvasive Treatments for Acute, Subacute and Chronic Low Back Pain Guidelines”
One of the most notable highlights is non-pharmacologic treatment (now recommended as a first-line treatment) including spinal manipulation as well as acupuncture. Please see link below:

In a little under three weeks, McMaster University Continuing Health Sciences Education, in conjunction with the Canadian Contemporary Acupuncture Association, will be hosting the medical conference: Contemporary Acupuncture Advances - “Implementing Contemporary Acupuncture Techniques To Improve Clinical Outcomes.” As co-chair of this conference, it is my goal and the goal of the Planning Committee to provide all attendees with a broadened perspective and understanding of the value of Contemporary Medical Acupuncture applications in modern-day medical practice.
Even if it is not your interest to personally deliver acupuncture in your practice, this conference will equip you with the necessary information to understand the basis behind evidence-based Contemporary Medical Acupuncture when engaging the services of other health professionals who provide acupuncture in management of your patients with pain and functional disorders.

Physicians who do not have familiarity with current acupuncture practice may not understand the differences between Traditional Chinese Acupuncture and Contemporary Medical Neurofunctional Acupuncture. Contemporary Neurofunctional Acupuncture is defined as a precise peripheral nerve stimulation technique, in which fine solid needles (acupuncture needles) are inserted into anatomically defined neurofunctional sites, and stimulated manually or with electricity for the therapeutic purpose of modulating abnormal activity of the nervous system and/or the endocrine, exocrine and immune systems, in pain syndromes and functional problems. Contemporary Neurofunctional Acupuncture is based on well-established, evidenced-based principles.
Given the current focus on opioids and safe alternatives for pain management, this conference is an excellent way for physicians and other regulated health providers to become oriented with and informed of the latest evidence-based advancements and applications in this field. Past experience with acupuncture practice is not a pre-requisite for this conference.
This program has been approved by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the McMaster University Continuing Health Sciences Education Program for up to 17.75 MOC Section 1 CE hours.
This three-day world-class event will be held at the Hamilton Convention Centre, 1 Summers Lane, Hamilton, Ontario, from Friday, May 26 to Sunday, May 28, 2017.
