[Forty Years of Hinton Fine Art]
by Tyler Waugh • Thu, Jan 19, 2012

What began as a university class in 1972 will enjoy 40 years of championing and creating local art.The Hinton Art Club has spawned a variety of successful artists over the years and has hosted the Northern Zone show four times, including several dozen artists last spring.

“Through the years we have been great ambassadors for Hinton and have participated in many town functions,” said Alicia Nielsen, the current president, who has been a member since arriving in Hinton in 1976. “Many of our members have had solo shows and belong to other art affiliations. Many continually support other groups and organizations by donating art works for auctions.”The club began as a university art class in 1972 where credit courses were offered once a week for 10 weeks at a time. The club then became a society and started having shows in various venues in town. The club also joined the Alberta Community Art Clubs Association, which was also working with the University of Alberta Arts Department, and members were encouraged to participate in regional shows with the hope of progressing to the provincial show. “As art club members became more experienced and knowledgeable, they then started teaching,” said Nielsen. The club will be hosting a demo day on Jan. 28 from 1-4 at The Guild, where people will have the opportunity to witness members work with pastels, acrylics and watercolours, among other mediums. “We are currently considering a course that would offer a few lessons on each media; however, this will depend on what this demo day brings,” said Nielsen. The club took on a major creation in 2009 when Nielsen and Monika Dery designed and managed the mural mosaic titled Hinton Through The Ages, a 240-panel project that involved 200 painters who ranged in age from three to 93 and represented all walks of Hinton life. The first laying down of the panels took place in June 2009 with fanfare from CKUA and special guest musicians, The Polyjesters. “This was when all the painters finally got to see what the overall image was,” Nielsen said. The mural depicts the female influence with their counterparts in early native days; forestry, mining and professional careers. Children with various activities are within the rainbow of hope for the future and on the lower section: transportation from canoe and horse to trains and trucks in industry. After several delays in finding a home for the mural, the club was thrilled to find out the mural will be erected for display later this year at the Hinton Train Station Museum, an appropriate location considering the historical content. “It will be fantastic to finally have it up,” she said. The club has seen many location changes through the years but its 30 members are now entrenched in their home at The Guild, where their work is hung on display, and also for sale. The club also has a rotation art program whereby it supplies new artwork to businesses every three months for a nominal fee. The club is hosting a series of DVD lectures this year to help further art education to anyone who might be interested. For more information on the club, its programs or the Jan. 28 demo day, please contact Alicia Nielsen at (780) 865-4853 or me-a-no-d@shaw.ca.
