Like a Moon on Water

Like a Moon on Water I live in the woods on 196 acres in central Ontario in the District of Muskoka where I enjoy walking the trails and working in my somewhat wild garden.

It has been a dream of mine to share this space with others who are also interested in exploring nature and a spiritual lifestyle. I have had a life long interest in the study of religion, being raised in a Protestant Christian family but made aware quite early of other worlds religions and lifeways through the open-mindedness of my parents who emphasized both education and personal choice in spiritual investigation. My particular interests in university where I completed a Masters degree were the Sacred Feminine in art and as archetype with an emphasis on feminist spirituality and on ritual studies including theory and practice in the area of ritual innovation and creation. An interest in Asian religions and meditation lead to the study of Buddhism both Korean Zen and then Tibetan Vajrayana and a lifelong commitment to the study and practice of Buddhist Dharma. I took refuge vows in 1996, and Bodhisattva vows in 1998, and the novice monastic vows in 1997. I love writing and painting as creative outlets and have a deep love and commitment to the land where I live. I am a mother and grandmother.

What is important is not to make too much of our experience. We love to create magical meaning and elevate ourselves through our so called spiritual experience, imaging ourselves to be special. But from the point of view of Dzogchen, everything is to be liberated for presence has no ground or root. Good things should go free, bad things go free. If we get attached to the moments when we have good health and all is going well, then when we get sick, we can become unhappy because we have attached our sense of happiness on an experience.

Enjoyment is different than attachment. Enjoyment is in the moment, attachment seeks continuation of the moment. The key then is to relax, be present in the moment, use each moment, each arising as a means of returning to instant present that rests on nothing. The more you practice in the view, the more everything becomes a teaching for you, so that every song you hear, the food you eat, or standing in a queue in the supermarket, everything becomes a revelation of the nature of mind.

Everything changes when we awaken to the realization that awareness is unborn, is not a thing, is not resting anywhere. Then all our assumptions, all the beliefs that we have relied upon and have taken to be true about ourselves and our world, turn out to be false. Instead of helping us, these beliefs have just maintained the confusion. But when we see that our nature is infinite and beyond conditioning, then we can simply relax and be present with both stillness and movement, realizing that this very moment is all we ever have.

Yeshe Tsogyal Calling her Teacher:
Come and claim me.
All of me.
I am not afraid of you
Or of myself drawing near to you.
I know your name as you know mine
And as we swing around this mandala
I will not falter or betray you
One look into your eyes relieves me of despair
So forever mindful I will dance
A thankful protege
And offer you sweet emptiness
And bliss.

Happiness as a Spiritual Practice: A Spiritual Autobiography
How often has someone asked you if you were happy? Were you able to answer them right away or did you have to take some time to think about it, and then found yourself reflecting on their words as if they were some kind of puzzle to sort through or riddle to solve? Happiness is a feeling that we think we know and recognize and might even assume to be our natural state. Maybe we think that we should be happy simply by virtue of being alive. Lately however I have come to the realization that being happy is not so natural a situation. It is not something that I can assume simply because I am alive and find my eyes open and awake some morning. Being happy I know now is usually a choice, and a choice that must be opted for daily, hourly, and sometimes when things are particularly challenging, moment by every moment. Being happy means that we have made a choice to surrender to happiness as a spiritual practice. By doing so we are then fortunate to be in the position to help others and support their choice to be happy too.
