One of the strangest parts of survival mode is that it can feel normal while it is happening.

You answer the email.
You keep working.
You stay functional.

But inside, your nervous system may already be reacting like something much bigger is happening.

The critic says:

“I failed. I’m terrible at this.”

The coach says:

“That did not go well. What can I learn from it?”

The critic shames.
The coach guides.

The critic makes you want to hide, quit, or overthink.

The coach helps you pause, reflect, and try again.

Usually, the voice you repeat becomes the one you believe.

The goal is not fake positivity.

The goal is to strengthen the voice that helps you grow.

We often treat emotions like problems to get rid of.

But what if they are signals instead?

Emotions help us notice, interpret, and respond to what is happening within us and around us.

Fear may try to protect.
Anger may point to a boundary.
Sadness may reflect loss.
Guilt may call for repair.
Joy may show us what matters.

So the question is not always:

“How do I stop feeling this?”

Sometimes the better question is:

“What is this emotion trying to tell me?”

Understanding emotions creates clarity.
Suppressing them usually creates confusion.

The cognitive triangle is not a one-way street.

Thoughts can shape feelings.
Feelings can shape thoughts.
Both can influence behaviours and behaviours can reinforce them both.

That is why we can get stuck in patterns so easily.

If you think:
“I always fail”

you may feel discouraged.

That feeling may lead you to avoid trying.

And that behaviour can strengthen the original belief.

This is one of the foundations of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

The good news?

Change is possible.

When you shift even one part of the triangle, you can begin to change the whole cycle.

Sometimes healing starts with one new thought, one small action, or one moment of awareness.
