01 — January: Restore

January is not about rushing forward.
It’s about slowing down, reconnecting, and letting the body and mind breathe.

After a season of stimulation and constant movement, the most radical act of wellness is to create space for rest and regulation.

This month, our focus is on:

• supporting the nervous system
• choosing rituals, materials, and practices that feel safe to the body
• cultivating rest without guilt
• allowing progress without force
Holistic living begins when the body and mind feel safe, grounded, and restored.

Ask yourself this month:
What would it look like to move at the pace your body actually needs?

Resolution 1 of 12 — care, paced by the body.

Cottontail rabbits don’t dig burrows — they survive winter by staying hidden.
Dense ground cover gives them shelter from wind, snow, and predators.

• Maintain low evergreen cover — juniper, yew, and holly provide storm shelter
• Leave brush piles along edges — rabbits tuck into shallow “forms” out of the wind
• Keep ornamental grasses standing — clumps hide rabbits from overhead predators
• Let shrub thickets stay natural — brambles and native shrubs create escape cover
• Leave patches of meadow or prairie — tall vegetation breaks winter winds
• Create connected brush corridors — rabbits avoid open spaces and move through cover
• Keep pets away from wildlife areas — quiet spaces help animals rest through winter

Thoughtful winter cover gives cottontails safe places to rest until spring returns.

Because they never enter true hibernation, these animals must keep moving all winter to survive, using brush piles, logs, and sheltered corners near homes.

Their cold-season foraging quietly reduces pests, proving winter wildlife is still working the night shift.

You salted your driveway to keep your family safe.
Now every bird and deer in your neighborhood is dying of kidney failure.
What rock salt does to wildlife:
🧂 Attracts herbivores — Deer, rabbits crave salt (mineral deficiency in winter)
🧂 Kidney poisoning — Road salt = sodium chloride (deadly in quantities animals consume from driveways)
🧂 Paw pad burns — Dogs, foxes, rabbits get chemical burns on feet
🧂 Toxic grit — Birds eat salt thinking it's digestive grit (can't process it, kidney failure)
🧂 Water contamination — Salt runoff poisons streams, wetlands, kills amphibians
The facts:

US uses 24 million tons of road salt annually
1 teaspoon of salt can kill a small bird
Deer lick driveways for salt (consume lethal doses)
Salt runoff has contaminated 40% of US urban streams
One salted driveway = toxic zone for 100+ yards

What you see: Safe driveway
What a cardinal sees: Digestive grit (they eat small stones to grind seeds)
What a deer sees: Essential minerals (licks driveway, consumes 10x lethal dose)
What happens next:

Cardinal's kidneys shut down in 48 hours
Deer becomes lethargic, stops eating, dies of renal failure within a week
Your dog's paws crack and bleed (you wonder why she's limping)

Alternatives that DON'T poison wildlife:
✓ Sand or gravel (traction without toxicity)
✓ Kitty litter (clay-based, non-toxic, cheap)
✓ Alfalfa meal (biodegradable, actually FEEDS wildlife)
✓ Beet juice brine (used by some cities, non-toxic)
✓ Heated mats (for steps/walkways, no chemicals needed)
✓ Shovel more, salt less (old-fashioned but effective)
✓ Pet-safe ice melt (calcium magnesium acetate - expensive but non-toxic)
If you MUST use salt:

Sweep up excess after ice melts (don't leave it to "dissolve")
Use 50% less than package recommends
Apply ONLY to walking paths (not entire driveway)
Never pile snow with salt residue near bird feeders or gardens

You wanted to prevent your kid from slipping.
You just poisoned 50 birds instead.
