Sexual assault happens more often than many of us realize.
1 in 3 women and girls, and 1 in 6 men and boys, will experience it in their lifetime. Most often, the person causing harm is someone known to them.
This reality can make it incredibly difficult to speak about.
Not only because of what happened, but because of what can happen after—when someone gathers the courage to share and is met with disbelief, minimization, or systems that struggle to hold the full truth.
The impacts of this kind of violation are layered and deeply personal.
It can leave people feeling isolated, disconnected, or carrying something that was never theirs to hold in the first place. Many move through the world quietly holding these experiences, shaped by shame, fear, or not knowing where it is safe to land.
If this touches your life, directly or through someone you love, please know this:
You are not alone.
There are spaces, people, and ways of being that honour your story with care, dignity, and respect.
As we move through Sexual Assault Awareness Month, may we continue to grow our capacity to listen, to believe, and to walk alongside one another with compassion.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month 💚
