Norway has just over 5 million people.

Yet they’ve won more Winter Olympic medals than any country in history.

Not because their kids train harder.

Because they protect their mental development longer.

Norway delays pressure. They build confidence, emotional regulation, and resilience before constant evaluation.

So when pressure comes later — their nervous system doesn’t shut down.

It performs.

In Canada and the U.S., many athletes experience pressure before they’ve learned how to manage it. That’s when you see hesitation, overthinking, and loss of confidence.

Mental performance is trainable.

This is exactly what we work on in our Youth Sports Performance Program at Couples to Cradles Counselling — helping young athletes build confidence, emotional regulation, and resilience under pressure.

If you want to understand why Norway is dominating & what parents can do differently, comment SPORT below and we’ll send you our full blog on youth sports in North America.

And if your child is struggling with confidence or performance pressure, you can book a free consultation to learn how our program can help.

After events like what happened in Tumbler Ridge, many parents feel unsure on what to say to their kids.

Research on child trauma exposure shows that:
• The way adults frame events influences a child’s stress response.
• Repeated media exposure increases anxiety.
• Predictability and routine reduce perceived threat.

Here are our tips 👇🏼

Ask what they’ve heard.

Keep explanations brief and factual.

Anchor present safety.

Limit exposure.

Maintain routine.

Hard conversations do not create fear.
Uncontained information does.

It was never about the spill.

It was the third mess of the morning.
The 12th interruption.
The mental load running in the background like 47 open tabs.
The text you haven’t answered.
The laundry you haven’t folded.
The fact that you haven’t sat down once.

So when the carton tips over — your nervous system tips over with it.

And suddenly you’re reacting at a level 10 to something that’s actually a level 2.

But here’s what I’m also noticing lately:

A lot of moms are carrying anger that isn’t just about dishes and juice.

We’re overstimulated.
Under-supported.
And watching the world fail to protect children in very real ways.

When stories about exploitation and abuse dominate headlines, when powerful people avoid accountability, that doesn’t just stay “out there.”

Mothers feel it in their bodies.

Protective anger is wired into us.

So yes, sometimes the spilled drink gets the reaction.
But underneath it might be exhaustion… and grief… and the weight of living in a world that doesn’t always feel safe for kids.

This isn’t about feeling like you are a bad mom.
It’s about understanding what’s underneath your reaction.

If this feels familiar, comment RAGE and I’ll send you the article on depleted mother anger.

And if you’re in Canada and realizing this is more than just a rough morning — book a free connection call with one of our mom therapists. You don’t have to carry all of it alone.

To clarify: I’m not saying only mothers should care.

This account speaks to mothers. That’s my lens and my community.

Anyone who cares about protecting children should be paying attention.

Those were someone’s daughters.
They needed adults to protect them.
Not adults who used them.

What you say in those moments teaches them:

👉🏼How to tolerate rejection

👉🏼How to repair

👉🏼How to read social cues

👉🏼How to survive not being chosen

And that matters waaay beyond elementary school.

Mornings aren’t chaotic because you’re a bad parent.

They’re chaotic because tiny humans have underdeveloped prefrontal cortices and very strong opinions about socks 😂🫠

Why is my kid so rude lately??! That was the number one identified challenge with 6 to 10 year olds that our community shared when we put up our question box.

Short answer is development.
Longer answer: growing brains + social pressure + testing autonomy + uneven emotional regulation.

We talk about how to do both. Follow for more support in raising your kids ❤️

Ages 6–10 are this weird middle zone where kids look older, talk older… and still melt down over being given the wrong cup.
And it can be a relied to know that it is developmentally normal.

During these years, kids are learning how to name emotions, read social cues, solve problems, and handle frustration.

If you or your child is struggling during this stage and if you want more support navigating this phase, our child therapists at Couples to Cradles can help you understand what’s typical, what’s not, and how to make home feel less like a battleground and more like a place to grow.
