The 3 Biggest Mistakes When Starting Your Health Journey   ⁣

Making healthy changes feels easy. But *sticking* to them? That’s a whole other story.⁣

These are some of the most common mistakes I see that tend to end in frustration, disappointment and self doubt.⁣

1.) Your goals are too vague.⁣

If your goals are unclear, your plan of action will be as well. Too often I hear people say they’re “trying to eat healthier” or “starting to workout more” which raises some major red flags. ⁣

If you haven’t broken down HOW you’re going to incorporate more healthful foods and HOW you’re going to incorporate more movement, you’re sure as hell setting yourself up for failure.⁣

Think specific, measurable and realistic.⁣

That’s the first step to success.⁣

2.) Trying too much, too quick.⁣

Being gung-ho to make healthy changes is amazing but if you try to overhaul your life overnight you’re pretty much destined to fail.⁣

A healthful lifestyle take time! Enjoy the ride and just keep putting one foot in front of the other.⁣

3.) Focusing on what to remove instead of focusing on what you can add.⁣

This is a sure-fire way to get stuck in the “diet” mentality. ⁣

A healthy lifestyle is a lifelong commitment and restricting yourself from the foods and activities you love isn’t sustainable.⁣

Make changes that honour your preferences and lifestyle and be sure to leave room for flexibility and forgiveness.⁣

I used to think it was normal to not feel well all.the.time. To wake up unmotivated to start the  day and to be absolutely exhausted by 3pm.⁣

I used to think it was normal to feel 6 months pregnant with bloat after nearly every meal. That the crampy feeling deep in my stomach is just something that happened after you ate.⁣

A year ago I was going through the most difficult time I’ve experienced to date.⁣

It seemed as if every time I started to get a grasp on things life threw me another curveball. ⁣

Stress started to take a toll on my body. My gut issues slowly crept back, I experienced more anxiety than ever, my skin flared up the most since high school and for the first time ever I struggled to sleep.⁣

Coming from my background in health and wellness I knew that if I didn’t start doing something about the stress then it would be a lot harder to come back from this.⁣

I began incorporating a morning routine. Waking up without an alarm, getting outside in the sunshine, practicing gratitude and incorporating medicinal mushrooms.⁣

In the past mornings were a struggle. Coming from the service industry I was use to late nights and not-so-early mornings.⁣

But it wasn’t long before my morning routine became habitual. Slowly my anxiety & stress eased up and the physically symptoms started to diminish.⁣

How I went about incorporating and sticking to these practises proved to be extremely successful and because of that I started to take my clients through those exact same steps.⁣

Our goals were completely different but our success was the same.⁣

Seeing their results I thought it was only right to put those steps on paper.⁣

And with that “The 3 Secrets to Healthy Habits” was born. ⁣

⭐️ CHICKPEA BLONDIES ⭐️⁣

I’ve been on a roll turning beans into dessert 😂⁣

But once you try em’ you’ll know why 👇🏻⁣

⁃1 can of chickpeas drained & rinsed (398 mL)⁣
⁃1/4 cup maple syrup⁣
⁃3 tbsp h**p hearts⁣
⁃2 tbsp chia seeds⁣
⁃1/4 tsp baking powder⁣
⁃1/4 tsp baking soda⁣
⁃2 tbsp collagen powder (optional)⁣
⁃4 tsp vanilla⁣
⁃1/2 cup 70%+ dark chocolate chips⁣

Preheat oven to 375ºF. Combine chickpeas, maple syrup, h**p hearts, chia seeds, baking powder, baking soda, collagen and vanilla into a food processor and process until smooth. Fold in half the chocolate chips. Pour mixture into a baking dish and bake for 15 minutes (or until toothpick comes out almost clean). Top with remainder chocolate chips immediately after removing from oven & let melt. Let cool completely and refrigerate for 30 minutes before cutting.⁣

Bloated & crampy after every meal? ⁣

I get it…⁣

It can be super uncomfortable when your belly feels swollen and gassy after every meal.⁣

And though herbs & teas won’t solve the root of your tummy issues, they are great to have on hand for emergency relief.⁣

Here are some of my fave herbal teas to help relieve bloat:⁣

✔︎ Fennel⁣
✔︎ Peppermint⁣
✔︎ Chamomile⁣
✔︎ Lemon Balm⁣

These herbs help relax the smooth muscles of the digestive tract which can help relieve gas, cramping and bloating.⁣

But, like I mentioned, bloat could be a sign that there’s deeper issues going on. Things like:⁣

⁃Poor gut-brain connection⁣
⁃Imbalance of healthy gut bacteria⁣
⁃Poor enzyme secretion / low stomach acid  ⁣

🍪 WHITE BEAN COOKIE SKILLET 🍪⁣

These were friggen tasty.🤤⁣

Is it just me or is there something super satisfying about a cookie topped with sea salt?!⁣

👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻⁣

⁃Coconut oil (for greasing)⁣
⁃1 cup cooked navy beans ⁣
⁃1/2 cup rolled oats⁣
⁃1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce⁣
⁃1/4 cup maple syrup⁣
⁃1 tsp pure vanilla extract ⁣
⁃1 tsp baking powder⁣
⁃2 tbsp collagen powder⁣
⁃1/2 cup of 70%+ dark chocolate chips⁣
⁃1/4 tsp coarse sea salt⁣

Preheat oven to 350ºF and grease an 8” cast iron skillet. Combine navy beans, oats, applesauce, maple syrup, vanilla, baking powder and collagen in a food processor until smooth. Fold in 3/4 of the chocolate chips. Pour mixture into skillet and top with remainder chocolate chips. Bake for 35 min or until toothpick comes out almost clean. Top with sea salt & let cool completely before cutting.⁣

Foods to help control the inflammation that could be triggering your whacky BMs, brain fog & daily exhaustion:⁣

✔️ Fatty fish - salmon, mackerel, sardines⁣
✔️ Walnuts⁣
✔️ Flaxseeds⁣

⬆️ These foods contain Omega3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in particular) which can reduce the production of pro-inflammatory molecules and substances.⁣

✔️ Turmeric - Turmerics active component, curcumin, has strong anti-inflammatory properties. Make sure to pair it with black pepper as it can strengthen its absorption by up to 2000%.⁣

✔️ Ginger - Much like turmeric, ginger’s active component (gingerol) has strong anti-inflammatory properties.⁣

✔️ Garlic - Garlic contains compounds that target cytokines (proteins that are involved in inflammatory reactions).⁣

Eating healthy isn’t rocket science but knowing which foods can trigger bloat, brain fog and fatigue is a whole different ball game.⁣
