Skiing is great cross-training for taijiquan! I grew up skiing on the slopes of Sir Sam's and the resilient, springy quality that one cultivates in the legs to ski well is very similar to the what the term "song" means in our taijiquan practice. In taijiquan, we want the entire body to be imbued with that resilient, springy quality so that it has enough structure to offer resistance but also enough relaxation to absorb incoming force. The end result in both cases should be something that can yield and bend so it doesn't break by being too stiff while also not being so yielding and bendy that we just flop over or collapse entirely.

As my taijiquan instructor has said, everything we do is training. When we think of it that way, the key is to be mindful of HOW we are training our body and mind.

The Leonid meteor shower is rolling through November night sky again, and it’s another chance to look up and make wishes.

🗓️ Best time to watch: Nights of November 16 and 17.
🌚 Moon? Barely visible. Perfect to stargaze.
💫 Expect around 10–15 meteors per hour under dark skies

So bundle up, head somewhere cozy and dark, and get ready to spot those streaks of light.

Faculty Spotlight!
Johonna McCants-Turner is an Associate Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at Grebel. Her research areas include Christian social ethics; Black feminism and womanism; carceral abolition; restorative justice, transformative justice, and interpersonal violence; narrative, arts-based and participatory research.

Recent publication: “Prison-Industrial Complex Abolition and Transformative Justice: A Primer for Christians” (co-authored with James McCarty), in The Business of Incarceration: Theological and Ethical Reflections on the Prison-Industrial Complex, ed. Justin Bronson Barringer, Sarah F. Farmer, and James McCarty (Eugene, OR: Wipf and Stock, 2025).

"My current book project, Love in the Wake of Wounding (Eerdmans Press), argues for abolitionist and reparative responses to intimate violence against Black women, drawing from the resources of Black feminist and womanist Christian ethics and liberatory anti-violence movements."
