👁️ Parents Are Noticing It Too… 👁️

Kids are becoming nearsighted at younger ages — and it’s not just “more screen time.”

👀 Growing eyes are changing faster than ever.

But here’s the good news: myopia progression can be guided and managed!

At Eyecademy, we track how each child’s eyes grow and use evidence-based tools to keep prescriptions from worsening unnecessarily.

What We Do at Eyecademy:

✅ Advanced diagnostics to monitor eye growth and axial length
✅ Specialty spectacle lenses technology (myopia glasses)
✅ Night lenses (Ortho-K)
✅ Custom soft lenses for myopia control
✅ Therapeutic night eye drops
✅ A clear plan for every child’s future vision

The goal? 👉 Clear, confident sight — for life.

If your child’s prescription has changed more than once in the last year, or you’re noticing squinting, headaches, or sitting closer to screens… it’s time for a myopia control evaluation.

Impossible to do both in a 5-minute evaluation.
It's nice to know a patient feels heard when you take the time they need.

🏓 Pickleball & Eye Safety: Some Important Numbers 👁️

Pickleball continues to boom—but with that growth comes a rising risk for eye injuries. According to a newly published study in JAMA Ophthalmology, based on U.S. emergency-department data from 2005-2024:

An estimated 3,112 eye injuries nationally have been linked to pickleball in that period.

In 2024 alone, about 1,262 eye injuries were estimated.

From 2021 to 2024, the incidence of eye injuries increased by roughly 405 cases per year.

About 70% of those injured were age 50 or older, and older players had a ~39% higher risk than younger players.

The most common cause of these eye injuries: direct hits by the ball, followed by falls or paddle strikes.

🛡️ What This Means for You

Pickleball is fantastic for fitness, social interaction, and fun—but if you’re playing (or coaching, or watching friends play), the numbers say this:

The risk of a serious eye injury is rising as more people pick up the sport.

Older players (50 +) are more vulnerable, especially if they have slower reaction times or pre-existing eye/health conditions.

While protective eyewear isn’t mandated in casual play, the data strongly suggests it should be considered part of your gear.

✅ Simple Prevention Steps

1️⃣ Use polycarbonate sports eyewear with side-protection (regular glasses or sunglasses often don’t offer enough impact resistance).

2️⃣ If you wear prescription glasses, ask your eye-care provider about “Rx sports goggles” or wrap-around protective sports frames.

3️⃣ Stay alert especially near the net or kitchen zone—since reaction time is low and the ball travels fast.

4️⃣ If you, or someone you play with, gets hit in the eye—even if it seems minor—seek prompt evaluation by an eye specialist. Even “just a scratch” can lead to more serious problems.
