Compression stockings apply graduated pressure to the legs, with maximum compression at the ankle that gradually decreases up the calf. This graduated compression supports vein walls and venous valves, encourages the upward flow of blood, and improves venous return to the heart. By counteracting venous hypertension and blood pooling, the stockings support the natural skeletal-muscle pump and reduce fluid leakage into surrounding tissues.
