What myths or misconceptions have you held about hypnosis?

The world of hypnosis is shrouded in mystery and misconceptions, often perpetuated by popular culture and the media. To truly understand the power and potential of hypnosis, it is vital to separate fact from fiction.

Just what is going on inside our heads while deep in trance?

Hypnosis has captured people’s imaginations for over a century, often seen as an eclectic and powerful tool for healing and change. While the ways of hypnosis may seem mysterious, more recent discoveries in brain research have helped us understand what's going on behind the scenes. In this articl

"I'm too strong-willed to be hypnotized" is a phrase I have heard a fair share of.

The truth though, is, if you have a strong will, you are probably easier to hypnotize. "Strong will" just means a better clarity and what you want and where you are focusing.

Doesn't that sound familiar...

What stories do you tell yourself?

"I'm too weak to change"
"I'm not strong enough to quit"
"I'm not smart enough to pass that test"
"I'll never be able to do that"

So often I meet people who tell themselves stories like this, usually because it was the only story they ever heard. These are the stories we tell ourselves that hold us back from achieving, from doing better, from pushing through the difficulties and hard times, to even greater heights. but it doesn't have to be that way.

You can learn new stories.

Stories that motivate and excite you, that inspire you to do and be better. You probably already know a few. You just need to tell them a bit more often.

"You are getting sleeeeeeeeepy..."

The line has been used in so many movies and TV shows. But is hypnosis actually sleep?

Not exactly. While people often find trance relaxing, and closing your eyes can help you focus on going deeper into the experience, that isn't always the case.

When you read a book and lose yourself in the experience, or get so focused on the road that you suddenly find yourself pulling up to your destination, that is a kind of hypnosis.

It's a natural state you enter all the time, and just like reading a good book, it can be used to make big shifts in the ways you view the world, for the better!

Have you ever actually researched the placebo effect?!?!

The stuff you can get achieve by prescribing a sugar pill while wearing a white lab coat is frankly mind-boggling, even when people KNOW it is a placebo!

That having been said, when tested for during brain scans, hypnosis and the placebo appear to work under completely different mechanisms.

The placebo seems to require the prefrontal cortex (the part we might call our "conscious" mind).

Hypnosis, on the other hand, seems to work BETTER when this part of your brain is less active, like you might feel when "in the zone."

Both are great examples of the power of the mind and how it can influence the body, but they are hardly the same 😉

I have a problem with this.

Émile Coué, one of the early adopters of hypnosis, or "autosuggestion" as it was called then (wonder why that name didn't stick... 🤔), would often have his clients go home and recite this as a mantra every morning, this by itself having a profound effect, not to mention the other work he would do. So why do I have a problem with it?

It's all about action.

As it is phrased, there is no action. "Better-ness" is just happening, as if some outside force is causing it, and it robs the individual of the opportunity to take responsibility for their own growth.

Try this instead: "Every day, in every way, I am finding opportunities to get better and better"

A small change, but now, rather than just waiting for change to happen, you become the force for change in your own life, by switching the focus of your attention.

And where attention goes, energy flows.

If I had a nickel for every time someone asked me if hypnosis is real...

I think a big part of it is how Hollywood and the entertainment industry have treated it over the years: either it is mind control, played up for suspense and horror, or it is all quackery, played for laughs, with little to no in-between.

The truth though is hypnosis as a modern practice has been around for at least 200 years.

It's been proven useful in reducing stress and anxiety levels, been used in place of anesthesia in surgeries, relieving chronic pain, and overcoming addiction.

And despite the attempts of more than one or two governments, it can't make you do anything you don't want to do.

So what's holding you back from using this tool to change your life?

Imagination is one of the greatest tools we have, but just like when you swing a hammer and miss the nail, it can still end up hurting you.

Sometimes, it's something small, like "what if they say 'no'?" Others, it's something big, such as "What if the rest of my life is like this?"

The problem is that your brain has no way to separate what is imagined and what is real. The same parts of your brain light up when either happens!

That means when you imagine fumbling your presentation, or getting trapped in a habit for the rest of your life, that becomes part of your reality. It makes it a self-fulfilling prophesy, or as I like to call them, self-fulfilling curses.

Thankfully, the tool that dug you into this hole can help you climb your way out.

All it takes is a change in how you picture it, and challenge yourself to imagine solutions, then make those solutions real and change your life, one thought at a time.

Learning gets a bad rep, and it isn't hard to see why.

From kindergarten to getting a PhD, school, the place of learning, is a stressful place for a lot of people, and so we start to think learning itself has to be stressful.

Think of the face someone makes when they are focused: Eyebrows furrowed, almost like they are pouting.

The truth , though, is that learning doesn't have to be that way.

With hypnosis, learning becomes calm, relaxed, and easy. And when learning is like that, change becomes second-nature.

So my question for you: What do you want to learn?

When I first started studying hypnosis and how it could be used to change someone's life, I was always amazed by all the benefits it could have all on its own, just by entering the state over and over again.

And it makes sense, hypnosis is a naturally calm, focused, and relaxing state to be in.

Of course it is going to help you reduce your stress levels the more you are in it.

And naturally, the lower your stress is, the more confident you feel.

When you are confident you can be relaxed and stress-free, going back to that state of calm focus becomes even easier.

If you are calm and have less stress, then of course pain becomes less intense, because the things oftentimes causing or worsening it have melted away.

Because you are stress-free, pain-free, and able to relax more easily, sleeping becomes as easy as closing your eyes.

And these are just the side benefits! The incidentals that happen along the way.

Imagine what it can do when focused on helping you with your specific problem, this state of intense, relaxed focus, where your natural creativity and imagination is allowed to go to work and start creating solutions!
