The illusion of communication frequently shows up in mediation. It often looks like, “I already explained this to you” or “I told you how I feel” and upon a bit more investigation, realizing that the other person had not interpreted or understood the person in the way they’d wanted.

Personal projection is a real thing and so is wanting people to read our minds. We all just want to be validated, but validation comes from being direct about our needs/wants and the other person being able to attend to those needs/wants through listening and then action.

Too many people see direct communication as an affront, but indirect communication and poor listening is likely holding you back from getting your needs met.

Sometimes we don’t know what we don’t know! Something feels unresolvable? Maybe consider a mediator. 🙏

My Mediation for Managers toolkit is still available for download with some of my best practices you can use in your own day to day. But also, sometimes we need help and that’s okay. Sometimes we’re not the right person to intervene and that’s important to know. Get in touch for a free intake. 💕

New resource just dropped! 📣📣📣

Managers and supervisors are expected to handle and resolve conflict among their team(s) with often little to no training in how to do so effectively.

Employees look to their leaders for support during times of instability and the way you respond ultimately makes a big difference in individual and team performance, morale and longevity.

The famous saying of people do not leave bad jobs, they leave bad managers, often has a lot to do with ineffective support, advocacy and communication.

I have worked closely with many managers, supervisors, and directors, supporting them in their challenges to resolving disputes and organizational team challenges.

Do you struggle with intervening in employee disputes? Does your conflict avoidance interfere in your ability to manage and support your teams with confidence? Have no idea where to start when conflict disrupts? If so, then I have some tools for you that I’d like to share!

Download my free Mediation for Managers resource to learn some of my very own methods and best practices that you can begin to apply immediately. Find the download link in my bio! 🥳

What is a culture and what shapes it? A culture is shaped by shared belief, purpose, values and vision. Seems simple? Even with a shared culture, we’re often not on the same page. That’s because a group or organizational culture is made of many components, meaning misalignment can show up in both clear and insidious ways.

We spend a lot of time developing our culture on paper but not reviewing or assessing its tangible impact, success, challenges. We also don’t often discuss how conflict styles and approaches impact and change the culture (hint: it huge).

In my Developing Transformational Conflict Cultures training, we look at both our group/orgs organizational and conflict culture noticing how it aligns with what’s on paper. We learn about punishment and transformational models, and how each play a role is shaping performance, dynamics, decision making and other critical components in organizational ecosystems. We look at needs and challenges our teams are facing and how we can become more conflict generative, accountable and safe.

If you had to be honest, where would your team fall?

Whenever things feel insurmountable and hard, I always find myself going back to this quote by thinker, writer and abolitionist Mariame Kaba, and I know I’m not the only one. ✨

When things get bad, it is easy to fall into feelings of helplessness but it’s important to remember that we need each other to survive. We are meant to connect and work together. When so many in our communities are at risk, let’s get involved and work together to stand in solidarity with them. We are not helpless, we are actually very powerful, when we work together. ❤️

What does this have to do with conflict? I cannot even begin to describe the ways. How we relate to others and how successfully we can work with those who are different than ourselves will play such an important role in our collective organizing. Empathy and collaboration; equitable leadership, and transformative ways of working through (inevitable) challenges are crucial skills for sustaining ourselves through the long haul.

I’m here to help. Whether you want a free one time consultation (open to all but especially those most vulnerable and targeted), referrals, or a service I offer like training or mediation. I’m always available to discuss possibilities.

Thanks to the for asking me to guest author their 44th issue on Navigating Interpersonal Conflict in Gender Based Violence Work. Here are a few sneak peaks at the final product. Some topics discussed: conflict vs abuse, punishment vs transformational conflict models, intentional conflict practice, mediation and more, including examples where you can apply the theories and concepts. This issue is for anyone working with people experiencing GBV but also applies to all of us working with others towards justice, equity and safety.

You can access the entire thing for free on their website. I will post a link in my stories. Enjoy! 💐✨️

I'm still here! I just don't really enjoy social media these days (honestly, does anyone lol). It's been a busy summer, and to end it with a bang, today brought me to Parliament Hill in Ottawa with this year's cohort of interns. We talked about team dynamics, managing conflict, and building relationships of openness and curiosity. What a fun group with a great sense of humour and so much insight to share. ✨️

Hello new followers!🌈 Welcome!
I'm Eddie 👋 and I'm a conflict mediator, trainer and consultant based in Montréal. I support leaders and their teams in improving conflict management skills via in person and online training, mediation and organizational development processes. I also just launched my first self paced e-course to make my learning and development content available to all.
Do you dread conflict? Fear it? Hide from it? Do you show up ready to listen, or only ready to speak? Do you trust people to be the experts of their experience, or do you think you know best? Are you concerned about controlling the narrative or being open and self reflective? Are you in a rush to fix an issue so that it goes away, or do you take a step back in order to plan and act according to the needs of others, but also your own capacity?
My Intentional Conflict Practice Framework is the approach I use to guide and drive my work. If you are reacting to conflict, like in some of the examples above, instead of using intentional strategy, then perhaps my approach could teach you a skill or two! We are always improving and growing our skillets, and conflict management (which is really also relationship tending, relationship management, stakeholder relationship management, client relationship management, people management, etc etc) is no different!
Where are you nailing it, and where can you level up? As people in relationships or leaders in challenging roles, we are constantly growing and trying to improve our approach. Check out my website to learn more about my offerings. Complimentary intake sessions available! 💐
