What happens when two pelvic health instructors start playing with pessaries at a conference booth? 👀

(Answer: a spontaneous mini-lesson and a lot of laughs.)

MJ was showing Claudia the different types of pessaries — just a sneak peek of what you’ll learn in our upcoming pessary courses!

📍 Montréal (en français) — December 2025

📍 Calgary (English) — 2026

From sizing to fitting and everything in between, these hands-on courses are designed to help clinicians confidently integrate pessary care into their pelvic health practice.

Because education is better when it’s both clinical and fun. 💙

We had fun doing these exhibitor booths 😅

Claudia, MJ, and our amazing instructor Alana Devlin are trying to pick the “perfect” date for our newest pelvic health course…

Spoiler alert: we couldn’t even see the dates, but we had a lot of laughs figuring it out!

These conferences aren’t just about lectures and learning. They're also about connection, creativity, and celebrating how far pelvic health education has come (30+ years strong and counting 💪).

Last October 21, I had the privilege of giving a lecture at McGill University on Emerging Practice in Physiotherapy, outlining the path we’ve taken in establishing Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation over the past 30+ years.

From its beginnings in the late 1980s treating female urinary incontinence, pelvic health physiotherapy has evolved to address complex interactions between the urinary, sexual, reproductive, digestive, and musculoskeletal systems with profound implications for mental health and quality of life.

Our journey has been one of education, collaboration, and perseverance from developing the first pelvic floor courses for physiotherapists in Canada to promoting interdisciplinary exchange and contributing to clinical research and advocacy.

The challenges remain, stigma, limited research, and systemic barriers, but the progress is undeniable. Today, pelvic floor physiotherapy is no longer “emerging”; it’s established, essential, and continuing to grow through research, innovation, and passion. 📚

If you’re interested in role-emerging practice, remember:

Keep your ear to the ground.

Go with the flow.

Be flexible.

Don’t be afraid of unpaid work.

Do it with passion, and the rewards will follow.

We’re back in the clinic after an inspiring few days at the joint CSPM/AUGS Conference in Vancouver! 🌿

It was an incredible opportunity to connect with colleagues, exchange new ideas, and celebrate how far pelvic health has come.

A special shoutout to Marie-Josée, whose pessary expertise absolutely wowed the crowd during her workshop showcasing the depth of clinical skill and passion that drives our team forward.

Conferences like this remind us how collaboration fuels growth for clinicians, for research, and most importantly, for the patients we serve.

What a week it was in beautiful (and unusually sunny!) Vancouver for the CSPM/AUGS Conference! 🌞💙

MJ and Claudia reconnected with colleagues and former students, attended incredible talks, explored the latest innovations in pelvic health technology and even brought home the Golden Pelvis! 🏆

Yes, our team won the CSPM Jeopardy contest, along with a Starbucks gift card proof that pelvic health knowledge and caffeine make a powerful combo. ☕😉

Beyond the sessions, it was also a wonderful chance for MJ and Claudia to spend quality time together, sharing ideas, laughter, and future plans for the CPHA in a relaxed, inspired setting.

Managing hymenal inelasticity isn’t always straightforward. It takes the right assessment to know when gentle stretches are enough and when a surgical referral is needed.

🔎 Inelasticity = stiff, unyielding tissue (different from high tone)
👐 Manual stretches can help when some space is available
⚕️ Surgical referral may be needed if tissue is too restrictive
✨ Remember: even after surgery, high tone might still be the real barrier

High tone vs Inelasticity 👀
They may seem similar, but are much different when it comes to pelvic floor treatment. Knowing the difference can change recovery..

🧩 High tone = muscles that stay “on” and struggle to let go
🧩 Inelasticity = tissues that don’t stretch or rebound easily due to stiffness

Each needs a different treatment approach, because what works for one won’t always work for the other.

Your patient's pelvic health matters, and the right guidance can make all the difference.

🧠 Understanding Inversion of Perineal Command

Sometimes, when patients are asked to lift their pelvic floor, they push instead. This is called Inversion of Perineal Command, a common but fixable pattern.

Swipe through to learn about Inversion of Perineal Command!

✨ Remember: It’s not a physical problem, just a mislearned command that can be retrained!
