🪳 Understanding the Lice Life Cycle (and why removing every nit matters!)
One of the biggest misconceptions about head lice is that treatment products solve the problem completely. The truth is, most lice treatments kill live bugs but do not kill the eggs (nits).
Here’s how the life cycle works:
• Nits (eggs): These are glued firmly to the hair shaft close to the scalp. They hatch in about 7–10 days.
• Nymphs: Once a nit hatches, the baby lice mature into adults in another 7–10 days.
• Adult lice: Adult lice can lay up to 6–10 new eggs per day, continuing the cycle.
This is why removing every nit is so important. If even a few viable eggs are left behind, they can hatch and restart the entire infestation.
Many over-the-counter products will kill the crawling lice, but the eggs remain attached to the hair and will continue to hatch if they aren’t manually removed.
✔️ Thorough comb-outs
✔️ Careful sectioning of the hair
✔️ Follow-up checks
These steps are what actually break the life cycle and stop lice from coming back.
Lice can be frustrating, but with the right approach and attention to the nits, they can absolutely be eliminated.
