These are very trying times. The coronavirus pandemic has turned everyone’s life upside down and is causing widespread worry about our health, the health of our loved ones, our jobs, and the economy. Many of us are staying close to home but are still wanting to do more.
I am writing to you because Everyone’s Sister, our refugee sponsoring group, is remotely supporting three siblings in Kenya who urgently need our help. Everyone’s Sister is currently working hard to raise funds to sponsor the three siblings to come to Canada. With enough support, we hope to be able to finish the application process by the end of December 2020.
Two young adults and a minor girl who are siblings had to flee the life-threatening situation in their home country, where they endured frequent discrimination and were ostracized because of their sexual orientations and gender identities. Some time ago, they fled from their family in hopes of finding refuge elsewhere. Unfortunately they did not find the safe haven they sought. Starting on their very first day in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, the siblings found themselves facing the same level of anti-LGBTQ hate and homophobia. Violent attacks escalated in 2018, against the whole LGBTQ community in the camp the three siblings relocated to Nairobi, along with a group of 200 fellow LGBTQ refugees.
Acting as part of that collective, they managed to create a small clothing business to pay for their needs by selling their beautiful creations abroad. In Kenya, refugees are not allowed to work or sell their products locally. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, shipping costs have soared and as a result the international market for the group’s creations has dried up. This has left the group without their main source of reliable income and puts them all in a very vulnerable position. The global circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic have made it impossible for them to seek refuge in a safe third country, as resettlement activities were suspended until very recently.
How You Can Help
As mentioned above, Everyone’s Sister is currently working hard to raise funds to sponsor the three siblings to come to Canada. Our plan is to support them when they arrive as privately sponsored refugees. At the moment we are also providing funds to support the siblings while they remain in Kenya, primarily to ensure they all receive proper medical care and for the youngest sister to continue her education.
If you would like to help Everyone’s Sister in these efforts your donation will go directly towards bringing these siblings to Canada. As a group, we are committed to supporting them for a year as they settle into their new life. In the meantime, your donation will help Everyone’s Sister provide stability to these refugees by making sure they receive the education and health care they need. 100% of your donation will go directly to the siblings to help them achieve their dream of becoming newcomers to Canada.
The great news is we have found a very generous donor who is willing to match any of the funds we raise between now and December 31st, 2020. This means any donations you make will have DOUBLE the impact!
